IDENTIFYING A TOPIC First identify a topic to study and reflect on whether it is practical and useful to take the study Several strategies can help to start the process of identifying a topic Draft a brief title for the study 2. How would this working title be written? “My topic is about…” “My topic is about factors affecting students’ performance in New Normal.”
3. Be brief and avoid wasting words “An approach to” or “a study of” Use a single title or a double title Consider a title no longer than 12 words 4. What questions need to be answered in the proposed study? Topic: Online Learning and Academic Performance How does online learning affect the academic performance of the students? What are the factors affecting the students academic performanc ?
A researchable topic - If the researchers have participants that are willing to serve in the study - If the researcher has resources at the key points of the study, such as resources to collect data over a sustained period and resources to analyze the information, through data analysis programs.
Characteristics of effective titles in research studies 1. Accurately indicates the subject and scope of the study. 2. Avoid using abbreviations. 3. Use words that create a positive impression and stimulate the reader’s interest. 4. Use current nomenclature from the field of the study. 5. Identify key variables, both dependent and independent. 6. Reveal how the paper will be organized. (optional) 7. Suggest a relationship between variables which support the major hypothesis. 8. Is limited to substantive words or descriptive terms and phrases that accurately highlight the core content of the paper.
Characteristics of effective titles in research studies 9. Does not include phrases like “study of”, “analysis of” or similar constructions. 10. Titles are usually in a form of a phrase, but it can also be in a form of a question. 11. If a quote is used as part of a title, the source of the quote is cited using an asterisk or a footnote. 12. Use correct grammar and capitalization with the first words and last words capitalized, including the first word of the subtitle. All nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs that appear in between the first and last words of the title are also capitalized. 13. In academic studies, rarely is a title followed by an exclamation mark.
Writing a research title According to Prieto, et. al. (2017) . The title of the research must clearly reflect the topic of investigation. And it must be original, clear, concise, and specific. Broad topics should always be narrowed down. Example 1: Broad topic: Video lessons in Mathematic Classes Specific topic: A Correlation Study on the Use of Video Lessons in Senior High School Mathematic Classes and Student Achievement . Example 2: Broad topic: Social Networking Specific topic: The Cause-Effect Relationships of Social Networking and Online Selling.
Techniques in narrowing down a topic into a research question According to Neuman (2007) cited by Prieto, et. al. (2017), suggests the following techniques in narrowing down broad topics. 1. Examine the literature. Published articles are an excellent source of ideas for research questions. a. Replicate a previous research project exactly or with slight variations. b. Explore unexpected findings discovered in previous researches. c. Follow suggestions and author gives for future research at the end of an article. d. Extend an existing explanation or theory to a new topic or setting. e. Challenge findings or attempt to refute a relationship. f. Specify the intervening process and consider linking relations.
Techniques in narrowing down a topic into a research question According to Neuman (2007) cited by Prieto, et. al. (2017), suggests the following techniques in narrowing down broad topics. 2. Talk over ideas with others. a. Ask people who are knowledgeable about the topic for questions about it that they have thought of. b. Seek out those who hold opinions that differ from yours on the topic and discuss possible research questions with them.

Choosing a topic for a research study According to Layder (2013) cited by Prieto, et. al. (2017), in choosing a topic, it is important to pick one that interests and motivates you. Deciding on a topic also entails being clear about which ones to avoid, especially if you have little experience as a researcher. Research projects must be as objective as possible, that is, freed from your personal biases or preferences as a researcher. As a researcher, you should avoid research topics that involve making you moral judgements about certain kinds of behaviour
