Cartonisation
or
Cartonization

This document is intended for information purposes only and is for internal use only
Cartonisation can be performed at:
-Pick release
-WIP completions
-Bulk pack

This document is intended for information purposes only and is for internal use only
Pick release
Cartonisation can be enabled or disabled for org/sub
Cartonisation will be called at pick release in enabled
organisations/sub inventories

This document is intended for information purposes only and is for internal use only
WIP Completions
Containers can be prepacked in WIP
Completion transaction recorded by scanning
LPN

This document is intended for information purposes only and is for internal use only
Bulk Pack
Inventory can be cartonised using mobile RF
device
Associates an LPN with the packed material
Does not suggest the container type nor the
number of LPNs to use

This document is intended for information purposes only and is for internal use only
Cartonisation Advantages
Suggest optimal packing configuration based
on :
packing requirements
carton weight and volume capacities
carton dimensions
item weight and volume capacities
item dimensions (l, w, h)

Carton Groups
Items are grouped by type of carton they require
Cartons are grouped by type of items they hold
Examples:
-refrigerated
-miscellaneous
-liquid
Some items may be packed in multiple carton
groups
Some cartons may hold multiple types of items
Currently, NO customer specific cartonisation

Carton Selection
Items broken up by carton group
Within each carton group
–Attempt to fit all items in one carton
Check for wt. & vol. of items compared to carton capacity
Verify dimensions of all items can fit in carton
If multiple matches, select smallest carton by weight cap.
–If necessary to choose multiple cartons
Fit as much as possible in largest carton by weight cap.
Attempt to fit remaining items in one carton (and repeat)
WIP pack -get as much as possible into the container
Pick release -pack in directed picking sequence

Container Load Relationship
Some items require even more specific packing
An item can be restricted to one container
That container may be restricted to hold a
different quantity of that item than is evident from
physical characteristics

Refrigerated

Set Ups -1
For each item that always require a specific container, a
container -item relationship must be defined.
For other items that will be packed into containers in a
container group, categories must be created that group the
container types and the contained items.
The corresponding items must then be assigned to those
categories, as well as given characteristics such as volume,
weight and dimensions.
The containers must be defined, given physical characteristics,
and assigned to the corresponding categories.
For sales order cartonisation, cartonisation must be enabled at
the subinventory and organization levels

Set Ups -2
Setup for cartonization uses Oracle’s Category and
Category Set functionality.
There are 2 pre-seeded category sets called Contained
Item and Container Item. Within these category sets,
users will create categories that model the different types
of packaging used.
–Miscellaneous loose material requires a simple corrugated cardboard
box. These boxes, and the items that can use these boxes, will be
given the category BOX within EACHof the category sets Container
Item and Contained Item.
–Refrigerated items, however, must be packed within coolers. These
perishable items and the coolers will be given the category COOLER
within EACHof the two category sets.

Set Ups -3
Before assigning the categories to category sets, it is
important to decide whether the cartonization groups
should be the same across all organizations, or unique
just to each particular organization.
If they are to be the same across organizations, before
assigning the first category to either category set, the
“Controlled At”pull-down menu should be set to “Master
Level”; otherwise, it should be set at “Organization
Level”.
Controlling the cartonization groups at the master level
makes setup easier, particularly if the items have already
been defined. However, it does limit the ability of different
organizations to use different packing configurations.

Set Ups -4 Containers
The containers must be defined. Container items are
defined as items in the same way that contained items
are defined.
Container items must have the appropriate category
assignment within the Container Item category set.
Weight, volume, and dimensions, must be defined for
contained items. These attributes pertain to the container
itself.

Set Ups -5 Containers
The container & transactable flags must be checked.
The internal vol. and max load weight must be entered.
–The units-of-measure for these measurements are the same
units-of-measure used for the volume and weight of the
container itself.
–Note that the container weight and volume are different from its
maximum load weight and internal volume.
–For a container, weight and volume are optional fields that give
the weight of an empty container and the volume of an empty
container, while the maximum load weight and the internal
volume are used to determine the capacity of the container.
–The container weight and volume are used to calculate the total
weight and volume of the LPN.

Set Ups -6 Contained Items
Contained items are given the appropriate category in the
Contained Item category set.
The weight, volume, and dimensions of the item must be
entered in the Physical Attributes tab of the item form. The
unit-of-measure for these measurements should be within the
same class for the contained items and the container items.
–The cartonisation algorithm can convert inches to centimeters because they are
in the same class, Length.
–If an item specific conversion is setup to convert, say, 1 liter of an item to 2
pounds, the conversion will still be performed, but the system may be more
difficult to maintain because units-of-measure will have to be checked as well as
the items physical characteristics.

Set Ups -7 Contained Items
All three physical attributes must be completely defined
for cartonization to operate.
If any of the weight, volume, or dimensions fields are left
blank, cartonization will not be performed for those
items.

Set Ups -8 Container Load
Relationship 1
Multiple relationships can be established for a single
contained item.
A preferred relationship is set using a checkbox on the
form
There can be only one preferred relationship for a
contained item.

This document is intended for information purposes only and is for internal use only
Set Ups -9 Container Load
Relationship 2
Prior to setting up these relationships, the container items
must be properly setup.
Any container item setup using the steps above is a valid
container item for a direct relationship.
Alternatively, to setup items just for direct container load
relationships, the only required step is to check the
container flag in the container object group. No other
physical attributes of the contained item or container item
need to be entered.

Set Ups -10 Container Load
Relationship 3

Set Ups -11 LPN Controlled
& Cartonisation Enabled
Cartonising sales order lines that are allocated from
subinventories where items are already packed in LPNs
can cause usability problems.
Therefore :
Organisation setting of cartonisation should be
controlled at subinventory level
In Subinventories that enable cartonisation, disable
LPN control
In this way, whenever a task is cartonised, the
operator is guaranteed that loose material is available.

This document is intended for information purposes only and is for internal use only
Set Ups -11 LPN Controlled
& Cartonisation Enabled
This may not make sense.
If an item requires more specific packaging than that in
which it is stored in the warehouse, those stored LPNs
should then
–be unpacked and repacked in the outbound carton
–or nested within the outbound carton.
