August 2024 meeting of the California Community Colleges Tableau User Group (CCC TUG). It's true what they say...TUGs really do grow up so fast! The CCC TUG is turning 1, and we're having a birthday bash celebrating all of you and your work. There will be a Tableau showcase exploring dashboards from 3 colleges, a birthday data challenge, and a demonstration of how to build Sankeys using viz extensions.

Purpose
Create a dashboard that is fun and
engaging and requires people to explore
all of the various data dashboards AHC
has available for our program review
process.
Timeline
Originally created in early 2023 as a way to
showcase dashboards for the IE office and
promote new program review process. With a
limited rollout to testers it never caught on.
After lying dormant for over a year, recently
the President has enhanced efforts to make
campus aware of our available data
dashboards. There will be a mention during all
staff day and inclusion in the fall IE office
newsletter.

Features – AI generated story and images
ChatGPT was becoming a ‘big deal’ in early
2023 and I wanted to try it out to see if it could
write me a story. After some trial and error I
came up with the current version of the story as
a treasure hunter that needed to escape.
But what’s a story without images? I then went
around looking for AI image generators that
could create quick and easy images I could use
to enhance the dashboard. Much more trial and
error here but the end result is visually
engaging.

Features – Lock Room
The main part of the dashboard is the lock
room. From here you have questions to be
answered by visiting various dashboards. Using
the red/green circles as ‘correct’ indicators and
a timer at the bottom to track progress.
Tableau Public can reset at a moments notice
so a reminder on this page was important so
people didn’t feel too bad about losing progress.

Features – Favorite
My favorite feature is having the questions tied
to which adventurer you choose but not making
it obvious until the end. This way people can
create a more engaging story (the chosen name
is used throughout) and can have multiple
experiences.
I had a vision of a treasure map as the first page
of the dashboard from the beginning so being
able to create it with AI was a fun
accomplishment.

Challenges – Incentive
Biggest challenge of new a dashboard is giving
people a reason to interact with it. And
unfortunately, ‘a place to get your program
review data’ is not very enticing.
Adding a leaderboard created a small ‘game’
feeling to the dashboard. If enough people
would submit completion times it could be a fun
discussion topic.

Challenges – One and done
I knew I wanted to create something that was
more than a ‘one and done’ experience. Just
because you escape the cave one time I wanted
to allow adventurous people to go again with a
new challenge.
The two solutions I came up with was the
‘choose your name’ mechanic. What seems to
be an innocent choice actually creates four
distinct sets of questions.
I also made the questions easy to update in an
excel sheet so I could refresh the dashboard
annually.

Summary
•Let AI do heavy lifting of engagement so you can focus on the data
•Create something that connects positive memories to data
•Gamify and incentivize the data as much as possible
•Always work on promoting dashboards and get buy in from all parts of
campus (administration, faculty, staff)
