E nglish for S pecific P urposes

DEFINITION Some people described ESP as simply being the teaching of English for any purpose that could be specified. Others , however, were more precise, describing it as the teaching of English used in academic studies or the teaching of English for vocational or professional purposes.

Definition of ESP (Dudley- Evans, 1997) Absolute Characteristics ESP is defined to meet specific needs of the learners ESP makes use of underlying methodology and activities of the discipline it serves ESP is centered on the language appropriate to these activities in terms of grammar, lexis, register, study skills, discourse and genre.

Definition of ESP (Dudley- Evans, 1997) Variable Characteristics ESP may be related to or designed for specific disciplines ESP may use, in specific teaching situations, a different methodology from that of General English

ESP is likely to be designed for adult learners, either at a tertiary level institution or in a professional work situation. It could, however, be for learners at secondary school level ESP is generally designed for intermediate or advanced students. Most ESP courses assume some basic knowledge of the language systems

According to Stevens (1977) “ESP concerns the emergence of a number of activities, movements, and subjects that are carried out predominantly (though) not exclusively in English across the world.) It looks at the purpose for which the student needs to learn English, i.e. for occupational purposes.

Coffey (1985) observes that ES is a “quick and economical use of the English language to pursue a course of academic study (EAP) or effectiveness in paid employment”. ESP helps learners in different disciplines to follow their academic studies. (EAP) ESP helps learners to access the economical field and (EOP) and find effective paid employment.

Other Definitions: ESP can be, but is not necessarily, concerned with a specific discipline, nor does it have to be aimed at a certain age group or ability range. ESP should be seen simple as an 'approach' to teaching , or what Dudley- Evans describes as an 'attitude of mind '. “ESP is an approach to language teaching in which all decisions as to content and method are based on the learner's reason for learning“ (Hutchinson et al., 1987:19)

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES Learning centered approach content method Satisfy learner’s needs developing communicative competence The workforce supply and demand Academic culture Real word communication practice

Basic Features of ESP

ESP is goal oriented Because students study English for a specific purpose (i.e. to survive in an academic setting or in a workplace), topics and activities are specified on the goal of the student. Hence, the program should not be geared towards a general approach to teaching the English language.

ESP is based on needs analysis Relevant to the first criteria, the topics and activities embedded within an ESP course is based on the analysis of students’ needs (i.e. initial needs, learning needs, and target or end- of- course requirements).

ESP is time-bound Because students study English for a specific purpose, they do not intend to spend too much time engaging to indirect exercises. learning activities and Each session aims to contribute to the end goal, which should be met at a specified time or duration.

ESP is for adults Although there may be some people taking up ESP courses, most often the students are adults, simply because they are the ones who are opting to learn English as a preparation for higher learning or for the workplace.

ESP is discipline specific Most often than not, ESP courses are written to fit a particular group of students who belong to the same field of study. If you’re a nurse, you would not enroll in an English for Engineers course , would you?

Importance of ESP

Faster acquisition Faster acquisition of the required English language terms: as the content is context- based, it allows students to learn in an accelerated manner.

Optimum use of their learning resources, all of which are pre- identified according to the goals and needs of the learner. Optimum use learning resources

Effective content application Effective content application as learners can use the appropriate language terminology on the job soon after the completion of the course.

Rapid increase in job productivity and efficiency as employees are better prepared to communicate with their clientele and colleagues . Job productivity and efficiency

Reasons why we should have ESP in the Philippines

Increasing demand of ELT The demand of English language teaching has been increasing both in private sectors and in formal institutions such as those in state and private universities . This demand ha s been generated by advances in commerce and industry which require people to have adequate command of the language both spoken and written.

Underdeveloped skills The result of English language teaching at the secondary level has not been very encouraging despite four years' study of English. such as writing reports, reading scientific books, taking minutes, or taking part in conversations meetings, are not that developed. At the tertiary level, complaints from university teachers and employers show that skills in English,

Multi- disciplinary knowledge to develop well- rounded and skilful citizens who are knowledgeable on multiple disciplines as well as to promote systems thinking (i.e., each course should require understanding the link between the environmental, economic, political, and social dimensions)

Popularize and develop preference for sustainable lifestyles This can be done by increasing citizens' access to information on sustainable practices at home, in the office, in school, in the community, and in other settings through various media and creative communication means.

Prepared Learners Prepare the learners to enter the workforce, to handle crises, to become resilient and responsible citizens, to adapt to change, to recognize and solve local problems with global roots, to respect other cultures, as well as to create a peaceful and sustainable society.

It bears the mark of a global curriculum in the sense that it advances evidence- based and sound practices to equally meet global, national, and local educational expectations and needs. Global competitiveness

Aside from the given importance of ESP, what do you think are the importance of ESP to students, teachers, and other people? Taking into consideration the importance you have given, would you recommend that Philippines should have (if there is none) or should continue (if there is) ESP programs? Reflection Paper

What is EGP (English for General Purposes)? What are the similarities and differences of ESP and EGP? What is Needs Analysis? How do you do it? Research for Next Week
