Chemical Engineering Concepts
Unit operation:
Useful Physical changes occur in the chemical industry is known as a Unit Operation.
Example: Distillation, Filtration, Drying, Extraction, Gas absorption, Crystallization, etc.
Unit process:
Useful Chemical changes with or without physical change occur in chemical industry are known as a Unit Process.
Example: - Oxidation, Reduction, Alkylation, Sulfonation, Chlorination, etc.
Density:
(Mass / Volume)
1 gm/cm3 = 1 t/m3 = 1 kg/lit = 1 gm/ml
1 gm/cm3 = 1000 kg/m3
Specific Gravity / Relative Density:
S.G. for Liquids = Liquid Density / Water Density
S.G. for Gases = Gas Density / Air Density

Chemical Engineering Concepts
Viscosity:
It offers resistance to motion of translational of one layer relative to other or Fluid Friction or Fluid Thickness.
Newton's Law Of Viscosity
tau=u*du/dy
Shear stress = Viscosity X Rate of change of shear strain
Absolute Viscosity or Dynamic Viscosity:
1 (Kg/m.sec) = 10 Poise (P) or 10 (gm/cm.sec)
1 (N.s/m2) = 10 Poise (P) or 10 (dyne. sec / cm2)
1 poise 100 centipoises1 cP = 0.001 (Kg/m.sec)
Kinematic Viscosity
= (Dynamic Viscosity / Density)
1 m2/sec = 10^4 stoke (st)1 stoke 100 centistokes

Chemical Engineering Concepts
Pressure:
P=(F/A) (Force / Area)
(Newtons second law, F = m.a)
Force, 1 kgf = 9.806 N, 1N = 10^5 dynes
Absolute Pressure = Gauge Pressure + ATM Pressure
Absolute Pressure = ATM Pressure – Vacuum
1 Atmospheric Pressure=
= 1.033 kg/cm2= 1.013 bar = 14.7 psi = 101325 pa or N/m2
= 760 mmhg or 760 torr @ 0 °C = 10.33 MWC @ 4 °C
Work
Force X Displacement,
units = N.m, cal, Joule For Work, Energy and Heat, 1 cal = 4.1867 Joule

Chemical Engineering Concepts
Power = Work / Time, J/s = w,
1HP=0.7457 kW
Volume:
is the space occupied by substance.
1m3=1000lit=1kL
1 lit = 1000 cm3
Volume of cylindrical body
V=A*H=3.14*4*H (L/D)
Reynold's No. =To determine the type of Flow (Flow Pattern).Nre = (DV6/μ)

Ideal Gas law:
PV = nrt
P = Absolute pressure of gas (kPa)
V = Volume occupied by gas (m3)
R = Gas constant = 8.314 (m3.kpa / kmol.K)
T = Temp in (K)
Compressibility Factor:
Ideal Gas = PV= nRT ......... (Z = 1)Real Gas = PV = ZnRT
Thermodynamic Property for modifying the ideal gas law to account of its real gas behaviour
NTP: Press = 1 Atm & Temp = 0 °C
STP: Press = 1 Atm & Temp = 15.6 °C

Law of Thermodynamics:
Energy neither be created nor be destroyed. It will transfer from one form to other form.
Total energy of the universe is constant.
for e.g. 1. Pump Assembly 2. Steam Turbines

nd
Law of Thermodynamics:
Heat (any type of Energy) is always transfer from High Temp to Low Temp (Heat Dissipation).
To transfer heat from low temp to high temp need to provide external Mechanical Energy.

Law of Thermodynamics:
At Absolute Temp, Entropy of Perfectly crystalline body is equal to Zero.
Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics:
If Body A is Thermally equilibrium with Body B and If Body A is Thermally equilibrium with Body C then Body B
and Body C is Thermally equilibrium with each other

Thermodynamic Processes:
Adiabatic Process = Thermally insulated. No exchange of energy. Q= 0
Iso-Thermal Process = Constant T
Iso-Choric Process = Constant V
Iso-Baric / Iso-Piestic = Constant P
Boyle law: – For a fixed mass of gas at constant temperature, the volume is inversely proportional to the pressure.
V α 1/p T – Constant
Charles law: - For a fixed mass of gas at constant pressure, the volume is directly proportional to the temperature.
V α T P – Constant
Gay-Lussac law: - For a fixed mass of gas at constant volume, the pressure is directly proportional to the temperature.

• Enthalpy:
Enthalpy is defined as thermodynamic state function denoted by letter “H”, that consists of internal energy system (U)
plus product Pressure (P) & Volume(V) of the system.
• H = U + pV
• Thermal Conductivity: Thermal conductivity is a measurement of the ability of a substance to conduct heat.
Unit: - W/(M.K) , J/(Sec.m.K)
• Heat Capacity: - The amount of heat needed to rise the system’s temperature by one degree.
Unit: - J/k
• Heat transfer: - Amount of heat transfer per unit area per unit time. Unit: -W/(M2.K) and J/(M2.S.K)
Specific Heat: - The amount of heat required for rise one degree temperature per unit mass.
Unit: - J/(Kg.K)
