Test No. 1
Test Name: Specific gravity of cement

Introduction:
Specific gravity of the cement is the ratio of the mass of a given volume of the cement to that of
an equal volume of water at the same condition of temperature. The specific gravity of Portland
cement is generally about (3.12-3.19). Cement will react with water, so to prevent this reaction
kerosene should be used instead of water to be mixed with cement.

Purpose:
To find the specific gravity of cement.

Materials:
1- Ordinary Portland cement.
2- Water.
3- Kerosene.

Apparatus:
1- Pycnometer.
2- Weighing balance with sensitivity at least 0.1 gram.
3- Scoop.

Procedure:
1- Weight empty Pycnometer (W1).
2- Weight the pycnometer partially filled by cement (W2).
3- Fill remain part of the pycnometer by the kerosene, shake the pycnometer and then weight
it (W3).
4- Empty the pycnometer then fill it by kerosene and weight it (W4).
5- Weight the pycnometer filled by water (W5).

Calculation:
Specific gravity of the kerosene (Gk) =15

Discussion:
- Compare the test results with the approximate values of the specific gravity of cement.
- What is the significance of this test?
