TEACHING AND LEARNING
OBJECTIVES At the end of this unit, learners will be able to: 1. Identify the learning needs of the patient at the clinical site. 2. Develop teaching learning plan. 3. Perform health teaching at the clinical site.
Teaching is a deliberate intervention that involves planning and implementation of instructional activities and experiences to meet intended learner outcomes according to a teaching plan. Or Teaching is the process of attending to people’s needs, experiences and feelings and making Specific interventions to help them learn particular things.
LEARNING Learning can be defined as the change in behavior (knowledge, skills and attitudes) that can occur at any time or in any place as a result of exposure to environmental stimuli. Q#1: Identify the learning needs of the patient at the clinical site? Learning needs are defined as: • Gaps in knowledge that exist between a desired level of performance and the actual level of performance.
Steps to Identify Learning Needs Identify the learner. Choose the right setting. Collect data on learning. Include learner as a source of info. Involve members of health team. Prioritize needs. Examine educational resources. Assess demands of organization. Take time management into account.
Identify the learner: Who is the audience? If the audience is one individual, is there a single need or do many needs have to be fulfilled? Is there more than one learner? For example, an educator may believe that all postpartum mothers need a formal class on safety issues of their babies. Choose the right setting: Establishing a trusting environment will help learners feel a sense of security in confiding info, believe their concerns are taken seriously and considered important and feel respected. Collect data on learner: Once the learner is identified, the educator can determine characteristic needs of the population by exploring y .us or issues of interest to that population.
Include learner as a source of info: Allow the patient and family members to identify what is important to them, what types of social support systems are available or perceived to be available and how their social support can help. Involve members of health team: Nurses are not the sole teachers and they must remember to collaborate with other members of the health care team for a richer assessment of learning needs. Prioritize needs: A list of needs can become endless and seemingly impossible to accomplish of human needs may help the educator prioritize identified learning needs(Maslow's Hierarchy)
Examine educational resources: 1. Identification of need is useless to proceed with interventions if the proper educational resources are unavailable, unrealistic to obtain. 2. For example, if an asthma patient requires learning about inhaler or peak flow meter then they should be present there so that the patient can learn to operate them practically. Assess demands of organization: This assessment provide nurse information that reflect the educational policies of the health care facility. So, nurse should take care of the policies and should provide learning in according with the rules and regulations of organization. Take time management into account: Learner must be given time to offer their own perception of their learning needs. Minimize interruptions and distractions during planned assessment to save your time.
Q#2: DEVELOP TEACHING LEARNING PLAN Teaching learning plan consists of following 8 parts: The purpose . A statement of the overall goal. A list of objectives. An outline of related content. The instructional method(s) used for teaching related content. The time allotted for the teaching of each objective. The instructional resources(materials, tools) needed. The method used to evaluate learning.
Sample Teaching plan Purpose: Goal: Objectives & Subobjectives Contents outline Methods of Instruction Time allotted in minutes Resources Methods of evaluation
Q#3: PERFORM HEALTH TEACHING AT THE CLINICAL SITE? Assessment of learner: A 24-year-old male college student suffered a 7-cm laceration on the left lower anterior leg during a hockey game. The laceration was cleaned, sutured and bandaged. The client as given an appointment to return to the health clinic in 10 days for suture removal. Client states that he lives in the college hostel and can care for wound if given instructions. Client can understand and read English. Nursing diagnosis: knowledge deficit related to care of sutured wound. Goals: ❑ Short term goal : client will respond to questions regarding wound care. ❑ Long term goal: client's wound will heal completely without infections or other complications.
Behavioral objectives Content online Teaching methodes Describe normal wound healing Normal wound healing Describe normal wound healing with audiovisual aids. Describe signs and symptoms of wound infection. signs and symptoms include wound warm to touch, malalignment of wound edges, and purulent wound discharge. Use audiovisual aids to demonstrate infected wound appearance. Identify equipment needed foe wound care. Cleansing solution as prescribed by physician. Clear water, mild soap water, antiseptic solutions Demonstrate equipment needed for cleansing and bandaging wound. Provide hand out listing equipment. Demonstrate wound cleansing and bandaging. Demonstration of wound cleansing and bandaging on the client wounds. Provide hand out listing equipment. Describe appropriate actions if complications arise. Resources available for client questions include health clinic and EMR dept. Discuss available resources and follow-up treatment plan Identify date, time and locations of follow-up appointments9 suture removal) Follow-up treatment plan, Where and when. Provide written instructions.
Evaluation The client will: Respond to questions regarding self care of wound. Return demonstration of wound cleansing and bandaging. State contact person and telephone number to obtain assistance. State date, time and location of follow-up appointment.
