Can anyone remind me why it’s important to use proper grammar when writing definitions? It helps make our definitions clear and understandable. A complete definition should include the term being defined, the class it belongs to, and the distinguishing characteristics that set it apart from other terms.

W hat tense should we use when writing definitions? We should always use the simple present tense. It makes the definition sound more factual and immediate. Why is subject-verb agreement important in definitions? Because the subject and verb need to match in number. If the subject is singular, the verb should be singular too, and the same goes for plural.

W hat about vague definitions? Why should we avoid them? Vague definitions can confuse people because they don’t provide enough specific information. It’s better to be clear and precise. Why should we avoid repeating words or redundancy in our definitions? Repeating words can make our definitions longer and less clear. It’s better to be concise and to the point.

Read and analyze the following statements carefully. Identify if they are true or false. Shout TRUE if the statement is true and shout FALSE if it is not. 1. A definition should always use the simple present tense of the verb. True

2. In a definition, the term and the class must agree in number. True

3. When writing a definition, it is acceptable to repeat the term in the class or distinguishing characteristics. False

4. A definition must always include the term being defined, the class it belongs to, and distinguishing characteristics. True

5. It is not acceptable to use past tense verbs when writing definitions; the simple present tense should be used. False
