1. What is Health? Health is the state of being free illness or injury
Consumer health
Learning objectives identify and explain key guidelines and criteria used for selecting and evaluating health information, health products, and health services. distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources of health information using established guidelines. apply specific criteria to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and credibility of health products and services.
A teenager once went to the local market to buy materials for a Science project. Upon passing by some stalls, he was invited for a free orientation on the latest product of a company.
The company was selling “health rings” that can detect the mood of a person and help lower body temperature and blood pressure. The teenager was easily attracted, which made him buy two health rings for himself and his sister. He spent 600 pesos for the items.
After a week, the teenager and his sister developed red spots and rashes on their fingers. Upon checking, the rings are observed to have rust around them. The teenager wants to file a complaint so the company may return his money.
1. What is the nature of the teenager’s problem? The teenager’s problem was about a fraudulent sale of a product in the store 2. Who can help him with his problem? The teenager may report to the business owners or to the authorities of the store/establishment through formal letter of complaint.
3 . What rights protect the teenager? Under the consumer Act, all consumers are protected by the right to correct information and redress. The manufactures should replace the malfunctioning product or return the money used of the consumer. 4. What would you ask yourself before buying a health product to avoid the same experience? You may consider criteria In selecting a product: its health content, ingredients, sources, etc.. 5. As a Grade 10 student, how can you help the teenager? A grade 10 student may help the teenager by directing him/her to the proper individuals who may give help
How often do you purchase? How long does it take you to make a buying decision?
DECISION MAKING Is an important skill to teach to children of all ages, because parents want children to grow up to be independent, responsible, happy adults.
Consumer health Refers to the decisions you make about the purchase of product and use of health information and services that will have direct effect on your health.
Health information Is any idea that we hear from people around us, read from the books and other printed material, or from the media that influence our health.
Health products Are the items that we consume to improve our well-being like medicine, food, clothes, furniture, electronics, etc.
Health services Programs we avail from various providers such as physicians, nurses, therapists, health workers, hospitals, clinics, and the government. Examples are insurance, treatment, and cure, complementary and alternative medicice .
scenario no.1 A consumer buys an OTC pain reliever for a headache. They are in an hurry and quickly glance at the instructions before taking the medication. Problems 1. Misunderstanding Dosage: The consumer misinterpret the dosage instructions, leading to underdosing (ineffective treatment or overdosing (risk of toxicity). They do not realize the importance of spacing doses correctly, leading to unintentional overuse.
2. Ignoring Warnings The consumer might overlook warnings about the duration of use ( e.g not taking the medication for more than a certain number of days without consulting a doctor. They might ignore instructions about taking medication with food or on an empty stomach, potentially leading to gastrointestinal issues.
scenario no.2 A consumer with sensitive skin is looking to buy a new moisturizer. They visit a beauty store with a cast array of options, including products for dry, oily, combination, and sensitive skin.
problems Misleading Labels Products might have labels that are not clear or are misleading, making it difficult for consumer to determines if the product is truly suitable for sensitive skin Marketing terms like “hypoallergenic or dermatologist-tested can be vague and not regulated, leading to potential confusion
2. Allergic Reactions The consumer might choose a product with ingredients that can cause an allergic reaction or irritation, especially if they are not familiar with all the ingredients listed.
Questions: 1. What is the primary goal of Consumer Health Education? 2. Why it is important to read labels on especially the OTC medications? 3. Why it is important to be cautious of health products that promise quick and easy results?
