EQUATION VS. INEQUALITIES

Differentiate between equation and inequalities

In its simplest form in algebra, the definition of an equation is a mathematical statement that shows that two mathematical expressions are equal. For instance, 3x + 5 = 14 is an equation, in which 3x + 5 and 14 are two expressions separated by an ‘equal’ sign. EQUATION 01

Examples of Equations

Inequalities An inequality compares two values, showing if one is less than, greater than, or simply not equal to another value. a ≠ b says that a is not equal to b a < b says that a is less than b a > b says that a is greater than b (those two are known as strict inequality) a ≤ b means that a is less than or equal to b a ≥ b means that a is greater than or equal to b.

Examples of Inequalities

By pair: Place me where I belong. EQUATION INEQUALITIES

1. 2x² + 3x = 0 2. 6y - 2 < 20 3. 21b + 2 = 100 4. 5x + 2xy = 2 5. 4y > 2 Assessment

ASSIGNMENT Tell wether it is an equation or an inequalities. 1. 3y+5 = 5 2. 4xy < 4 3. 12b + 3bc = 4 4. 5ab > 6 5. 4a + 5 < 6
