Botanical name : Terminalia bellirica Roxb . Family : Combretaceae English Name : Belliric Myrobalan Large deciduous tree (25-30 m tall). Bark : Brownish grey bark having shallow longitudinal fissure. Habitat : It grows commonly in plains and lower hills of Southeast Asia. In India it is abundantly found in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Maharashtra . 60-100 foot height.

Leaves : Long, alternate and are clustered towards the end of branches . Elliptic or elliptic obovate . Petioles are without glands at apex. Both surfaces are puberlous when young and glabrous and reticulate when old. 7-14 cm in breadth. 10- 12 cm in length.

Flower Simple and Solitary flowers. White and greenish yellow in color . Axillary slender in spikes. Offensive odor. Appears in month of may .

Fruits Grey colored drupes. Ovoid in shape. Sweet kernels inside the hard covering of fruit are sweet in taste . Velvety Obscurely 5- angled when dried. January- February

Karma: Nervous system- Vibhitaki majja - Madaka and vedana sthapana . Digestive system- Deepana , Anulomana and krimighna (anthelmintic), chardi nigrahan (*overdose can cause vomiting). Ardha Pakva phala - Rechaka Pakwa phala - Grahi Indicated in diarrhea, rectal prolapse, hemorrhoids, worm infestations. Circulatory System- Styptic in nature. Indicated in Epistaxis. Respiratory system- Dyspnea, Asthma and Whooping cough. Eyes- Chakshushya - Indicated in various eye disorders like anjanamika , lagana , inflammatory disorders. Skin- A fine paste of powder may be applied on burns and scalds.

Amayika Prayoga : External Application- Rheumatism- Seed oil is used . Oil is beneficial- in skin diseases, loss of appetite, premature graying of hairs. Local application in some eye disorders. (in conjunctivitis, stye , chalazion ) Churna is sprinkled on wounds to prevent bleeding . Granthi Visarp - Vibhitaki phala majja lepa . Ripen fruit is astringent and is anti-diarrheal in action. This herb is beneficial in blood pressure and helps in lowering cholesterol levels. Bark is used for heart diseases.

Cont …. Vibhitaki along with Pipalli and Maricha makes it beneficial for lungs diseases. Bibhitaki mixed with Haritaki and Shunthi is helpful to remove kapha and extra mucus from lungs. Vibhitaki along with Brahmi helps in Insomnia. Cough- decoction of green fruit is used. It relives phlegm and bleeding in sputum. Dysentric , piles, leprosy- fruit pulp is used as remedy .
