Health: Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease. Infection: Invasion of the host by Pathogen is called Infection.
Pathogen: A microorganism capable of causing disease. Opportunistic Pathogens An agent capable of causing disease only when the host ( patient) is “ immuno -compromised”
Medical microbiology deals with the study of microorganisms responsible for various diseases of low to high intensity and it can be divided into: 1. Bacteriology , which deals with study of unicellular bacteria. 2. Virology , which facilitates study of viruses. 3. Parasitology , which involves unicellular to multicellular parasites. 4. Mycology , that deals with various fungal microorganisms .
Q: Importance of Microbiology in nursing? Nurses utilize concepts of microbiology while giving patient care. Knowledge of microbiology plays important roles in the nursing field in many ways such as: To prevent spread of infection: Nurses should have knowledge about the mode of spread of infection.
To know importance of Hand Hygiene/ washing This technique reduces load of microorganisms on hands of a nurse which further helps in restricting risk of hospital acquired infection. To maintain sterile field: A nurse must know procedures used to create and maintain a sterile field in the hospitals for operation theatres so that the post-operative infections could be avoided.
Proper administration Targeted treatment Proper administration of recommended antibiotic treatment for a particular duration is must based on knowledge of microbiology. Proper disposal of biomedical waste and segregation of waste in different bins according to their origin generated in healthcare settings helps in checking environmental pollution
To collect sample in proper way: Nurse must recognize the importance of proper collection of samples to be sent for bacteriological examination to obtain accurate results. Collect specimen from a proper site like, pustule or blood or stool etc. To give Vaccination: to control threats of various diseases like diphtheria or MMR etc. To give health education
