About This Presentation

Students love learning about Howard B Wiggle bottoms and how his current behavior gets him into trouble. He learns to change his behavior and do the right thing. There is a song at the end of the lesson which all kids love and sing along to.

Remind studentsthat yesterday, they read the story Howard B.
WigglebottomLearns to Listen Pair-share what happened in the story.
“It is very important that we show we are listening. We are going to practice
something called Whole Body Listening today!” Show students the whole
body listening poster. “There are 5 things that we can do to show we are
listening. Our eyes are looking, ears are listening, eyes are looking, brain is
thinking, and body is calm. When I say ’give me 5’, I want you to show me
this!” (practice this several times) Use the printable cards to have students
act out an example and non-example of each piece of whole body
listening.
Reread the story, but as you read, have students discuss the ways the
Howard is not listening.
“Yesterday we talked about and practiced whole body listening. What are
the 5 things you should do to show me you are listening?” (call on student
volunteers.) Have students practice “giving 5” Reread Howard B.
WigglebottomAsk “how can Howard practice whole body listening?”
Labeling Activity (whole group or individual options available)–now you are
going to get the chance to label Howard B. Wiggelbottom. In each box,
glue what he should be doing to show that he is listening.
“We are going to reread the story Howard B. WiggelbottomLearns to Listen.
As you listen to the story, I want you to think about the things that Howard
was not able to do when he was not listening. Read the story and discuss.
“You are going to get the chance to practice your listening skills!” show
students the coloring page “you are going to use your listening ears to color
the parts of the picture that I ask you to, with the color I ask you to use. Let’s
see who uses their listening ears!”

”This week we learned about whole body listening. Share the five things you need to
do to show you are a good listener.”
“Today is our last day of read (or listening [YouTube video]) to the story Harold B.
WigglebottomLearns to Listen. After reading “share what you learned from the story.”
Writing Activity-“You will write about how you can show you are a good listener.”
Model writing for students, then have students write independently.

Hook: Ask students to pair-share-“has there ever been a time when you haven’t
listened to directions?” “Why do you think it’s important that we listen?”
Book Introduction: ”Today we will read a story about a bunny named Howard B.
Wigglebottom. Howard does not use his listening ears.” Take a book walk and discuss
illustrations.
After reading, pair-share:
1.What are some things that happened when Howard B. Wigglebottomdid not
listen?
2.Why is it important that Howard learns to use his listening ears?
Group Game: “Now we are going to practice using our listening skills. We are going to
play the game red light, green light. When I saw green light, you use your walking feet
to walk forward. When I say red light, you stop right away. Let’s practice our listening
skills!”
