INTRODUCTION:
▪Sometime called Document Analysis
▪Has its roots in communication studies
▪Describes the characteristics of the materials
▪The material may be public records, textbooks, reports, letters, Films, tapes,
reports, or other documents.
▪Begins with a question that the researcher believes can best be answered by
studying documents.
DEFINITIONS OF CONTENT ANALYSIS:
Walizerand Wiener 1978: It as any systematic procedure devised to examine the
content of recorded information.
Content analysis is a research tool focused on the actual content and internal
features of media.
Kerlinger’s(2000): Content analysis is a method of studying and analyzing
communication in a systematic, objective, and quantitative manner for the purpose
of measuring variables.
USES OF CONTENT ANALYSIS:
Over the past decade, the symbols and messages contained in the mass media
have become increasingly popular research topics in both the academic sector
and the private sector.
These five purposes illustrates some ways in which this technique can be
applied.
THE USES OF CONTENT ANALYSIS
Some of the broad uses of this method are:
▪To describe trends in communication content
▪To understand the characteristics of sources from the messages they produce
▪To study changing trends in the subject content over a period
▪To study changing trends in cultural images, symbols, etc. as depicted in
literature or other texts
▪To analyze style
▪To secure political and military intelligence and legal evidence
STEPS IN CONTENT ANALYSIS
In general, a content analysis is conducted in several discrete stages. Although the
steps are listed here in sequence, they need not be followed in the order given.
In fact, the initial stages of analysis can easily be combined.
Nonetheless, the following steps may be used as a rough outline:
1. Formulate the research question or hypothesis
2. Define the universe in question
3. Select an appropriate sample from the population
4. elect and define a unit of analysis
5. Construct the categories of content to be analyzed
6. Establish a quantification system
7. Train coders and conduct a pilot study
8. Code the content according to established definitions
9. Analyze the collected data
10. Draw conclusions and search for indications
CONCLUSION
Content analysis is a useful research technique for analyzing large bodies of
text
It helps in coding of the text according to systematic and objective rules and in
drawing inferences from the data
However it doesn’t tell us about causal connections between variables under
study
CA opens up for the social scientist a wide variety of opportunities for
systematic use of the most pervasive form of evidence available regarding
human affair-the content of communication
As we review the variety of applications, the broad range of opportunities
becomes evident to us.
