PANAGDAIT!

TEASE MY MIND

Brain Teaser What can you keep after giving to someone?

Brain Teaser What question can you never answer yes to?

Brain Teaser What letter comes next in the following sequence? D R M F S L T_

Brain Teaser A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him underwater for over 5 minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be?

Quiz Time! Pre-requisite Assessment

Choose the best letter a b c d Question #1 This is a technique of converting one unit of measurement to another. a. Unit equality b. Dimensional analysis c. Scientific notation d. Standard notation

Choose the best letter a b c d Question #2 A combination of base units is called: derived unit b. c onverted unit c. u nit prefix d. SI unit

Choose the best letter a b c d Question #3 It is a letter or group of letters added at the beginning of the base word to change its meaning. unit b. S I c. prefix d. conversion

Choose the best letter a b c d Question #4 What is the scientific form of 3 000? 3x   b. 3x   c. 0.003 d. -0.003

Choose the best letter a b c d Question #5 What is the standard form of   0.001 b. 000. 1 c. 1 000 d. 1. 000

MEASUREMENT After reading the question, learner A will close her eyes, and the pair will wait for the signal to start. 1 2 Select your partner. Each pair will take turns going to the front to read the question aloud. 3 Then learner B will lightly tap learner A's hand. Then Learner A will uncover his eyes and signal their answers to each other using hand gestures.

Solve measurement problems involving conversion units; and a. b. d ifferentiate the various systems and units of measurement; c. Learning Objectives e stimate intercepts and slopes in data with linear dependence.

Systems of Measurement METRIC SYSTEM constitutes units based on powers of 10, which makes it preferred system to be used in science. Example: 1 kl is equal to

Table 1.1 The SI Base Unit Physical Quantity Unit Name Symbol mass kilogram kg length meter m time second S amount of substance mole mol temperature kelvin K electric current ampere A luminous intensity candela cd

Systems of Measurement DERIVED UNIT A combination of two or more base units.

Systems of Measurement EXAMPLE The velocity is “m/s” because it is a combination of space and time.

Systems of Measurement EXAMPLE The unit of density is “kg/m3” because it is generated from the kilogram, SI unit of mass; and the meter is base unit of length.

Systems of Measurement EXAMPLE The unit of pressure is “pascal” because it is equivalent to one newton per square (N/m2).

Unit Prefixes PREFIX is a letter or a group of letters added at the beginning of the base word to change its meaning.

Table 1.2 Prefixes for powers of 10 Power of Ten Prefix Abbreviation tera T giga G mega M kilo k Power of Ten Prefix Abbreviation tera T giga G mega M kilo k Power of Ten Prefix Abbreviation centi c milli m micro µ nano n Power of Ten Prefix Abbreviation centi c milli m micro µ nano n

Unit Prefixes EXAMPLE The wavelength of the green emission line in the spectrum of hydrogen is approximately 468 nanometers (nm). Express this length in meters.

DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS It is a technique of converting between units of measurement.

Dimensional Analysis UNIT OF QUANTITY Is an equation that shows the equivalent amounts of different units.

Table 1.3 Common SI- English unit equalities Unit Equivalent Unit 1 in 2.54 cm 1 gal 3.785 L 1 cal 4.184 J Unit Equivalent Unit 1 atm 101 325 Pa 1 ft 12 in 1 mi 5 280 ft Unit Equivalent Unit 1 slug 14.59 kg 1 N 0.2248 lb 1 eV 1.602 J Unit Equivalent Unit 1 slug 14.59 kg 1 N 0.2248 lb 1 eV

Dimensional Analysis EXAMPLE 1. How many inches are there in 12 m? Note: 1 inch is 2.54 cm

Dimensional Analysis EXAMPLE 2. Maynilad uses cubic meter ( ) as the unit of a volume of water used in each household. Determine how many cubic meters are there in a 15-L tank of water.

Scientific Notation expressing numerical value in simpler way. Ex. 1 990 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 Ex. 0.00000000000000000000000016726231

Uncertainty in Measurement Certain or exact digits are the ones that the measuring instrument can give. The smallest marked division in the measuring instrument is called the least count, uncertain digits are the ones estimated.

Precision and Accuracy   Formula for variance: : variance 𝝨: summation : difference of measurement N: number of variables

Precision and Accuracy 𝛔=   Formula for Standard Deviation:

Precision and Accuracy   Formula for mean or average:

Precision and Accuracy   Formula for mean of

Precision and Accuracy SEM=   Formula for Standard Error of the mean

Example: Five of your classmates measured the diagonal length of the board. Classmate A measured it as 2.54m; classmate B as 2.46 m; classmate C as 2.65 m; classmate D as 2.55 m; and classmate E as 2.39 m. Find the variance and standard deviation of the measurements made. Express the average measurement in a form that includes uncertainty. Precision and Accuracy
