Groupexercise Be in a group and read the case story. Then , discuss the following questions and forward your thoughts. What was the problem that prevented Yeshi from doing what he was instructed? If you were Yeshi , what would you have done in this situation ? 33
Yeshi in Lebanon When Yeshi went to Lebanon, he was 18 years old. He was employed as a driver in Beirut but didn’t speak English or Arabic. The next morning, his employer gave him instructions in English before she went out. Yeshi nodded in response signaling as if he understood the instruction. However, he couldn’t perform any of what his employer had instructed. When the employer came back, she saw that Yeshi had not done any of what she had asked him to do in the morning. Furious, she immediately terminated Yeshi’s contract. 34
There are many communication barriers . These barriers can stall or distort communication; therefore, attention must be paid to overcoming these barriers. Some of the common barriers are Lack of language skills Misunderstanding Use of difficult words Poor clarity of speech or message Lack of attention Different assumptions (e.g. thinking of oneself as always being right) Different points of view Conflicting body language 35
36
Time management and organization Learning outcomes : Identify the skills required to manage time effectively. Explain how to organize, plan, and divide time. 37
Plenary sessions what are the myths about time and explain what refers too? Time is unique . It is the only resource every person has in equal amounts, 24 hours a day. Time is perishable . You cannot really save time. You can “lose it or use it.” A problem with time as a resource is that you cannot borrow minutes from one day and use them the next day. 38
Time is a measure . When time is discussed, many people think first of the clock. Being on time for work, school, and appointments, and for payments such as rent and bills, is a necessity for almost everyone today. Time has a birr value . An old proverb tells us, “ Time is money .” It is to say: It takes time to earn money. It takes time to develop new resources. It takes time to get the most from your shopping birr. Time has other values . We need time for rest, leisure, and personal renewal, as well as for families, friends, neighbors, and our community. 39
Reflect on your personal time wasters and the effort you used to overcome them . What activity or habit do you feel is your biggest time waster? How does this time waste impact your productivity or progress towards your goals? Have you made any attempts to address or overcome this time waster? What strategies or techniques have you used to mitigate or eliminate this time waster? 40
Excessive Social Media Use : increase risk of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, social isolation, poor sleep quality, and body image dissatisfaction. Not Prioritizing: Prioritizing what is important to us is the best step in using the time effectively. Procrastinating : Someone who constantly puts things off or waits until the last minute. Forgetting to Plan : Lack of planning can cost you valuable time 41
the Priority Matrix 42
Exercise Which of my tasks needs to be done within the next 48 hours? (Those are the ‘Urgent’ tasks) Of the urgent tasks, which ones are more important? (It is a good idea to list your tasks in order of importance, rather than giving them an absolute ‘important/not important’ distinction) Of the non-urgent tasks, which ones are more important? (Again, it is a good idea to list them in order, rather than giving them an absolute distinction.) 43
Summary Managing time effectively is essential to maximize performance. Time management is one of the keys to superior work outcomes, professional growth, and a more fulfilled and happy life . Time management most definitely outweighs all the risks and troubles of learning. 44
Critical thinking and Problem solving skills Learning Outcome Identify what problem-solving skill is. Describe the different methods of problem-solving skills. Identify methods appropriate for specific problems. 45
Critical Thinking - is the process of objectively analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing information and arguments systematically and logically . It involves actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information gathered from observation, experience, reasoning, or communication. Activity Example:1 All rich people are happy, Money solves my problem 2 Women cannot be a leader. Or HIV transmits through mosquito or saliva. 3. You are in a debate that social science is better than Natural science why Because it is easy. 46
Activity Example:1 All rich people are happy, Money solves my problem 2 Women cannot be a leader. Or HIV transmits through mosquito or saliva . 3. You are in a debate that social science is better than Natural science why Because it is easy 47
What is Problem-Solving Skill? These are skills that enable you to identify problems, brainstorm and analyze answers, and implement the best solutions. Approaches to Problem-Solving - There are different kinds of steps used to solve problems both at work and in life. Here are two examples : 48
S.O.D.A.S . is one of the steps or techniques that can be followed while we try to solve a problem. It is an acronym for a simple problem-solving method that is easy to remember. It stands for: S = Situation : any situation or problem an individual faces that has to be solved. O = Options: List of alternatives that an individual can consider as a potential solution for handling the situation or problem. D = Disadvantage s : The adverse effect or negative consequence of the option considered as an alternative solution. A = Advantages: The benefits of the proposed options. S = Solution: the best solution for the situation to be applied and practiced. 49
Situation : You have a busy schedule and find it challenging to fit in regular exercise. Options : Generate different options for incorporating exercise into your routine. Disadvantages : Consider the potential disadvantages or challenges associated with each option: Advantages : Evaluate the advantages or benefits of each option: Solution : Based on the evaluation of options, disadvantages, and advantages, you can choose the most suitable solution. 50
Be in a group and read the case scenario. Some groups use the SODAS method to solve the given problem in the scenario and the rest of the groups use the second method to address the problem in the scenario. Note your discussion on the flip chart very well showing the steps clearly. Then, post the flipchart on the wall, the groups who use the first method gather on the right side of the room and the rest of the groups who use the second method gather on the left side of the room. Finally, in an alternative manner the two groups (Right and Left) forward ideas on how they attempt to solve the problem indicated in the case scenario 51
Birtukan is working in a hotel as a waitress and has been approached by her immediate supervisor for dating. Birtukan has got this job after a long and breathtaking struggle as she has to support her poor family too. If she does not accept the date, she feels that she is going to miss her work. Birtukan starts to worry again about the fate of the family and herself if she loses her job. 52

These skills are essential in the workplace as they enable you to: Identifying the problem analyzing possible solutions, and Determining the best course of action 53
