ofbusinessfunction.Itrepresentsmid-tolong-
termgoalswithalifespanofthreetofiveyears,
thoughitcangolonger.

OF STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT:
(1)THEMISSION.Strategicplanningstartswithamission
thatoffersacompanyasenseofpurposeanddirection.The
organization'smissionstatementdescribeswhoitis,whatit
doesandwhereitwantstogo.Missionsaretypicallybroadbut
actionable.
(2) THE GOALS. Strategic planning involves selecting goals.
Most planning uses SMART goals --specific, measurable,
achievable, realistic, and time-bound --or other objectively
measurable goals.

(3)ALIGNMENTWITHSHORT-TERMGOALS.Strategic
planningrelatesdirectlytoshort-term,tacticalbusinessplanning

helpsleadersperiodicallyevaluateprogressagainstthe

overallstrategicplan.Tacticsarewhatwillbedonetoachieve
theoverarchingstrategy.Tacticalplansaremadeupof
operationalplans,whicharetheindividualtasksthatmustbe
completedinordertoachieveatacticalgoal.Thewayin
whichoperationalplansrelatetotacticalgoalsisvery
importantbecauseoperationalplanshelpcompletetactical
goals,whichultimatelycompletethestrategicgoals-notjust
foroneproject,butforthesuccessoftheentirecompany.
