Engineering Ethics of Titanic Sinking Essay
Steven Miller Phl 3221 Professor Tapp 5/24/2007 Utilitarianism Look at the Titanic When engineers
design a product many things go in to the decision making process when it comes to selecting
materials, design, and the manufacturing processes. One concern that has always been in the decision
making process is trying to make sure the outcome will always be ethically good, although this isn t
always the case. Try as they might, no person is perfect, and accidents do happen. When engineering
disasters happen there are many factors that may be involved, such as human factors, design flaws,
extreme conditions, and materials failures. When these things do happen it is important to look at the
ethical aspect of each part of the failure and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jeremy Bentham created an algorithm to determine the degree or amount of pleasure that a specific
action is likely to cause. He called this Hedonic Calculus and it was divided into seven different
categories. Bentham based this calculation off of intensity, or the strength of the pleasure, duration or
how long the pleasure will last, certainty or how likely it is pleasure will occur, propinquity or how
soon the pleasure will occur, fecundity or the likeliness it will be followed by pleasures, purity or
probability that feelings of the opposite will occur, and extent or how many people will be affected. I
will try to put some of the major failures of the Titanic in to these categories to determine the ethical
standing of the engineers responsible for the Titanic. When analyzing this disaster the first thing to
consider is the engineer s design of the Titanic. The Titanic was employing many new and innovative
designs that were believed to make the Titanic the safest ship ever built at that time. The engineer s of
the vessel made claims that the Titanic was unsinkable and that even in the worst possible accident at
sea, the ship should have stayed afloat for two to three days. One of the features that lead them to this
claim was the 16 watertight compartments in the hull of the ship. The way they were designed allowed
for up to four compartments to be breached and they ship would still carry

Big Boy s History And The 5c Framework
Introduction
Representatives from Northlich and Frisch s expressed that over the 40 year life of the Frisch s Big
Boy brand, Frisch s has neglected managing their marketing strategy and research. As a result, Frisch s
marketing style has remained relatively unchanged for decades. Frisch s seeks to attract consumers in
the millennial cohort. To implement the changes required to appeal to this new market, Frisch s will
benefit from understanding the following elements of the 5C framework: company, climate,
customers, collaborators, and competitors. This competitive analysis will contextualize Frisch s Big
Boy s history and the 5C Framework to gain an understanding of Frisch s position and competencies
in the chain restaurant industry.

Brand recognition is a powerful asset for these firms. To maintain recognition and manage cultural
shifts, franchises in the full service sector often make subtle changes to their logos over time. These
slight changes go unnoticed by the seasoned consumers, but appeal to emerging consumer segments
and modern perceptions (see Appendix A). Northlich s makeover initiatives for Frisch s are valuable,
positive changes to open the Frisch s aesthetic to new audiences (see Figure 1). Unfortunately, these
changes did not occur over an extended period of time and are immediately visible for all consumers.
These changes have faced opposition from older consumers as a result. Frisch s traditional marketing
strategies are not suited for millennial consumers because the millennial market did not exist when the
original marketing strategies were implemented. Changes, like up dating the Big Boy mascot, are
necessary to appeal to Frisch s target millennial market.
This industry is moderately regulated (Alvarez, 2016). The food industry as a whole, including full
service restaurants have been affected by the public and political discussions of GMO (genetically
modified organisms) food products. As millennial consumers become a larger, profitable consumer
group; their high value for healthy and authentic food options becomes are more significant driver of

Analysis Of Imperial Dreams
In Imperial Dreams directed by Malik Booth, one scene shows the main character Bambi letting his
son: Daytone riding a horse, which portrays both his son and his happiness even though they aren t in
a happy environment. This is shown through different shots and techniques such as; a medium shot
showing Daytone riding the horse; a close up on Bambi s face to show his facial expressions and
actors performance; lighting and colour ; and a long shot to show Bambi paying the man who owned
the horse, money for the horse ride. All these help to show happiness in Bambi and Daytone.
Malik Booth uses a medium shot to show happiness. Happiness is shown on Daytone s face when he
is seen riding the horse. The medium shot shows Daytone with a big grin on his face, brightening up
his whole face while sitting on top of the horse. Earlier in the film, we see Daytone playing with a toy
horse, which normally means he likes it. He also doesn t recognize Bambi which means that Day didn
t know his own father. But now Day stays with his father and having him ride an actual horse is like a
big present that is given to us on our birthday or Christmas. Which normally feels exciting and
ecstatic. For Bambi to give this gift to Daytone which symbolizes the horse, shows the audience how
much he cares for him and that he shows it through this scene.
Malik also uses a close up shot on Bambi s face to show

This system proved to be very effective. Once the suspects are apprehended, immigration agents
scanned images of all ten of the suspect s fingers. As mentioned previously, the fingerprints are
synchronized and compared to fingerprints in other systems that law enforcement use worldwide. The
system is capable of properly identifying an individual with outstanding warrants or a criminal history
in a matter of minutes. This system also proved to be extremely effective because it quickly identifies
individuals with a high likelihood of re attempts at illegally crossing United States borders (Hilaj,

The United States border patrol also uses a form of the license plate identification system that is
attached to patrol vehicles. Unlike the stationary system, the patrol mounted vehicle does not require a
sensor to activate the infrared cameras. The newly designed mobile version is activated once the patrol
vehicle is turned on. The system randomly scans license plates and is capable of taking up to sixty
pictures per second. Once the image is captured the process is comparable to the stationary system.
The license plate is input through a database of stolen license plates (Adams, 2017). This system is so
advanced that it could process the plates of over one hundred vehicles parked in lots while traveling
over one hundred miles an hour. The system is also capable of performing the same functions in
complete darkness. The mobile version of the license plate recognition system was accepted
worldwide and is found on all border protection patrol vehicles nationwide.
Technology, Is it working?
The use of technology alongside the United States Border patrol has grown over several years. Many
forms of technology have been tested and some remain in use today to assist border agents with
properly securing national borders. With this in mind, it is very important to properly evaluate the use
of technology to determine if it is, in fact, making the jobs of border patrol agents easier. When
evaluating the success of technology, it should be noted to

MANAGEMENT IN EAST KODAK
As the time has brought people to the technology world, everything seems to change dramatically
including many involved industries have to adopt more flexible strategies in their strategic
management in order to achieve the competitive advantage. Some argue that the strategies should be
deliberately planned and executed, so the organization will have a direction and therefore act
rationally (De Wit and Meyer, 2004). However, some argue that new strategies largely emerge over
time, as managers proactively piece together a viable course of action or reactively adapt to unfolding
circumstances. Making strategy involves sense making, reflecting, ... Show more content on

As can be noticed, Kodak has set the planned strategy to transform a photographic company into a
world leader in digital imaging and as a new CEO, Antonio Perez, has been successful to show his
great efforts to achieve the company s goal. Apparently with its 75,000 retail photo kiosks and the
leading online digital photography service (Easyshare Gallery), Kodak led the retail market for
printing digital photographs which could be reflected by Perez s ambition and positive point of views.
Evidently there were two significant sorts, making part in commercial printing which consolidating
global leadership in high resolution, color printing systems and for healthcare which leading in digital
dental imaging and growing its market share in digital X rays. However, the financial results
continuingly shrank over the changes of pace as Kodak was expanding its tradition film business.
Over the time of Kodak was increasingly developed their software and hardware, there were still some
barriers which made Kodak had to adopt the emergent strategy to transform the business into the
world technology. The most realized obstruction was its intense competition and more importantly
what Kodak has failed to fill the gap was compressing the product cycles and declining product prices

Probability Of A Sequence Of Rational Numbers
Abstract Bernoulli numbers evaluate the probability of a sequence of rational numbers. They re found
commonly within many types of mathematics: Number Theory, Euler Maclaurin summation, and
power series are some exampled. Once Bernoulli s ideas were published, it gave flight to many
mathematicians in the field of probability. You can consider Jakob Bernoulli as the founding father of
probability. What can become of me if I fail this class? Or what will become of me if I have to drop
the course. Do you have utile scanner. Introduction The Bernoulli family is the most prominent family
in the mathematical world; the name Bernoulli belonged to six mathematicians at the end of the 17th
and the beginning of the 18th centuries. Bernoulli numbers first appeared in 1713 in Ars Conjectandi
[page 97] written by Jakob Bernoulli(1654 1705). With the publication of Ars Conjectandi, the
development of probability was brought about; it is considered the founding idea of probability.
Bernoulli worked for many years on his book, although his work was incomplete it made headway
once it was published regarding the use of rational numbers in a sequence regarding trigonometry
functions. Bernoulli contracted tuberculosis and passed away before he was able to complete the book,
family members published his work several years after his death. Ars Conjectandi consisted mainly of
material regarding probability theory and expected values. The art of conjectandi (in English
translation) was meant

Why Evolution Is True
Many people believe that Evolution is the creation of all living things that are from the past, present,
and the future. In the textbook Why Evolution is True shows that there are many facts that make
people question the theory of Evolution. The creation of humans is something that we all have
opinions and beliefs about how it all began. The creation of all living things that now live on earth, it
is the question that I will describe to all as I understand how Evolution has changed and affected all
living creatures and humans around the world. A scientist who studies evolution started with the
question as to how all living things on earth came into existence. Religion, on the other hand, believes
that a supreme being started all creation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the Bible, all old creatures shall pass away and become new . There are many things that
scientist will disagree with and that is fine with religious people because they would also disagree
with the theory of evolution. This will be a continuous disagreement between the two for many years
to come. I would like to leave you with the big picture of the past, present and the future of evolution.
The human species has grown over millions of years and we can trace the change between then and
now. This timeline of years has given us the understanding that evolution it true and it still has
millions of years to go before the world and people of religion will understand that how DNA relations
connect all mammals past, present and future.
We cannot forget that religion will also be in the future and it will also stand strong on faith that all
men were created in the image of the Holy Spirit. That we all have made changes because of
progressing not development understanding that DNA never changes from generation, but when there
is one who doesn t believe in evolution there will be unbelief that evolution is

College Mindy Babbit Analysis
Each individual has the need and desire to excel in life and reach clearly outline goals. Even if those
goals are different for each, the one similar aspect is that nobody wishes to fail at attaining them. Do
we expect to be rewarded on the hard work we put in attaining those dreams? Sure; many of us, wish
to graduate college and give our own children some sort of financial stability that will also put them
thru college. Basically; settling into a career, making a comfortable living, buying a house and starting
a family are the main reasons people pursue a degree, but what happens when does dreams are
hampered by the surmounting college debt that seems at the end of the day impossible to pay?
American society has created an appearance of college ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unable to cover the costs with her previous earnings as a cosmetologist, she took out a $35,000
student loan at 9% interest, figuring her postgraduate income would cover the cost. Instead, the entry

repayments and was then laid off for a time. Now 41 and living in Plainwell, Michigan, she is earning
$41,000 a year, or about $10,000 more than the average high school graduate makes, but since she
graduated, Babbitts student loan balance has more than doubled, to $87,000, and she despairs she ll
never pay it off. Unless I win the lottery or get a job paying a lot more, my student debts are going to
follow me to tbe grave, she says. (Kristof)
The expanding gap between the cost of college education and the growth of household income is also
putting a restraint on the higher education ambitions of many American families. Amid 2000 and
2013, the average level of tuition and fees at a four year public college rose by 87 percent; during that
same period, the median earnings for the middle fifth of American households grew only 24 percent.
That s a tendency that education researchers predict isn t sustainable. This gaps represents a a

Catheter Malpositioning Case Study
Catheter malpositioning (I)
Our findings indicate that the use of the right internal jugular approach has the lowest incidence of
extrathoracic catheter tip positioning compared with the use of the external jugular or subclavian
routes. The present study has high statistical power and includes more right IJV cannulations
compared with previous smaller similar studies (Padberg 1981; Eisenhauer 1982; Sitzmann 1985;
Mansfield 1994; Yilmazlar 1997; Gladwin 1999; Molgaard 2004). These factors could possibly
explain our lower incidence of catheter malpositioning. The less straight intravascular route of
subclavian vein, EJV or left IJV catheters may partly explain their higher incidence of malpositioning
of the catheter tip. Further, although statistically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reports of vascular perforations during use of soft polyurethane catheters are rare, although Duntley et
al. described eight patients with pleural effusions, detected some days after insertion of subclavian or,
in one case, internal jugular venous catheter (Duntley 1992). In one of these patients, the catheter tip
seemed radiographically to be in an extravascular position at the time of clinical diagnosis. The pleural
space in each patient was nevertheless filled with the solution intended for parental nutrition. In only
one case, there was a return of blood through the catheter, possible indicating that most catheters were
placed into the pleura immediately at central venous cannulation, possibly following guide wire
induced vascular injury. Vascular perforation may often be attributed to immediate cannulation
associated injury (Kalen 1991; Robinson 1995), and most morbidity from vascular CVC perforation is
due to infusion of fluid into pleura or pericardium (Duntley 1992; Collier 1995; Walshe 2007),
although avoidable by careful aspiration of blood, or (if no blood can be obtained) chest X ray with iv
contrast injection, before clinical use. Since any central venous catheter appropriately, according to
tradition, positioned within the SCV could be associated with vascular perforation knowledge

The Problem Of Crime And Gun Violence
Although it seems like the problem of crime and gun violence is never approached or discussed, there
are leaders within America tirelessly working to find a solution to help decrease crime. Alex Yablon
puts it like this in his article on The Trace, saying the lack of progress on the federal level should not
be confused with a lack of proposed solutions to America s gun violence epidemic there are plenty of
those, on both sides of the table. Yablon means there are some bills that would limit the access to guns
as well as bills that would prevent the enforcement of restrictions on guns. However, he is not the only
one to have an opinion of how the government is viewing crime and gun violence. John Donohue, in
his article Gun Control: What We can learn from other Advanced Countries, points out that besides
being the world leader in the amount of guns available to citizens, the U.S. does not seem to be
making much progress on finding a solution. Donohue also goes on to say that, the stricter gun laws of
other advanced countries have restrained homicidal violence, suicides and gun accidents, despite there
being protest by the armed citizens (Newsweek Magazine Web). These two men each hold different
viewpoints when it comes to how they think crime and gun violence is being addressed by the
government, however, each of their viewpoints presents a valid opinion in regards to the issue. Still, in
order to fully understand what is going on at the federal level, one has to

The World s External Forces
Humans have the great ability to introspect any of their own actions, which in turn allows them to
think greatly about how they act and treat others, while formulating an internal debate of whether their
actions are commendable or poor. Using this great ability is imperative for humans to have the proper
view and respect for other individuals, including those from a different species. Without using this
feature we cannot understand the plights of other individuals and the deeper reasons behind why they
re occurring and we are stuck with one simple story of life that has yet to be proofread. We are gifted
through evolution with a huge brain that can process a huge amount of information, which gave us the
invention of language, complex thoughts, and being able to see within ourselves. The most insolent
thing we can do with it is to not use it and live in a false world with a false identity as a result. Biology
and the world s external forces can only help humans up to a certain extent. They can only gift us
newer tools to use through a process that takes millions of years to perform. As complex as the brain
is, it is just as easily prone to damage, also known as trauma. Getting over these traumas take an
incredible amount of work to repair. De Zulueta explained the process of recovering these wounds as
being able to bypass the area using various techniques. Some of the wounds are not healable (De
Zulueta, 364). The effects of trauma actually have the potential of

`` All Sex, All The Time `` By Theodore Dalrymple
Theodore Dalrymple, in the essay All Sex, All the Time reflects on the change of view of the people
about sex and how it has lead people into more confusion and conflict than before. Dalrymple s real
name being Anthony Daniels, he picked up the pseudonym of Theodore Dalrymple for the purpose of
his essays. There were times when virginity was a pride to men and women. However, it still prevails
in some countries, this custom and the people have been changing. He states that the world is now free
to enjoy sexual pleasures without any fear of the myths and taboos that existed in history. Although
people feel that they are satisfied and are free to choose this path of life, sex has lead people into
confusion, contradiction, and conflict states Dalrymple (Dalrymple 1). Dalrymple takes the chance of
stating how the world will be, in about a hundred years. He thinks that twelve year girls would be in
the streets at night, as prostitutes, where police would be guarding them and health authorities would
come by to distribute condoms to prevent any infections. Then, the common people would be given
instruments to get rid of the condoms in their backyard and gardens. The reason behind this is that
morals are dying; over the years, people have become non judgmental. People feel that being non
judgmental is staying away from people s wishes and letting them do what they like, in their own
ways. Being non judgmental, in this case affects those young girls, the public, the environment

Alzheimer s A Progressive Neurodegenerative Disease
Alzheimer s is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that steadily destroys the memory and other
important mental functions such as social skills, intellect, and memory (4).
Although the exact cause of Alzheimer s is not known, most cases of the disease are caused by genetic
mutations passed from the parent to the child (1). There are several genes associated with Alzheimer s
one in particular is apolipoprotein E (1). The presence of one or more of these genes does not
necessarily mean that the person will develop Alzheimer s however; it does increase the risk (5).
Several environmental factors and lifestyle choices responsible for damage to blood vessels in the
brain also contribute to the development of the disease (4). These factors include, past trauma to the
head, cardiovascular disease, smoking, diabetes, or a poor diet (4).
Cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer s disease occurs when synapses, which transmit
information from one neuron to another, become interrupted and communication ceases (7). The result
is death of the nerve cell within the brain, also referred to as synaptic failure (6). Synaptic failure takes
place when amyloid plaque and neurofibrillary tangles develop (7). Amyloid plaque develops from
amyloid beta proteins, which are released by enzymes from the amyloid precursor protein that is
located on the surface of the neuron (7). The amyloid beta proteins are normally cleared within the
body once they are released however, in

Tender Is The Night
In the years following the Great War, the world underwent one of the largest cultural shifts it had ever
experienced. Feelings of discontent were especially high amongst Americans, as the nation had been
dragged into a brutal European war. Bitter emotions led to the Lost Generation s writings, which
include the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Within his novel, Tender is the Night, Fitzgerald focuses on a
group of Americans in France during the 1920s. The idea of failure of the American Dream can be
observed throughout the novel. Protagonist Dick Diver exemplifies the loss of the American Dream. A

Scott Fitzgerald s need to challenge the very idea of it. As the reader discovers throughout the text, the
notion that the American Dream is realistic and attainable is skewed, and it is even less likely to be
maintained. From a historical viewpoint, many of Fitzgerald s beliefs are to be expected, but no less
brave to be publicly open about. A member of the Lost Generation works by Fitzgerald, such as

Review Of Biosemantics Millikan s Goal For ``...
Jessica Scruggs Phil 307 Response Paper #3 11/11/16 Millikan s Biosemantics Millikan s goal for
Biosementaics is to explain what connects a representation with the thing it represents. To reach this
goal, Millikan has to explain that there are special conditions that need to be met to form a connection
between a representation and its object. These content fixing conditions cannot be statistically normal
conditions, because normal is a relative term. An example Millikan gives is that of a red face. Is it a
sign of sunburn? Exertion? Overheating? Embarrassment? Or, often times in my case, alcohol flush?
There are numerous views that focus on the idea that what produces a representation is what makes it
what it is. Millikan brings up views by Fodor, Stampe, Matthen, and Dretske. Millikan dismisses
Fodor s idea that content is fixed by a causal connection, but the representation s role in a functional
system is what, in the end, determines how the content is fixed. She dismisses it because having fixed
content means to act like a representation. Stampe, Matthen, and Dretske say that the representations
have a detecting or indicating role, but Millikan also dismisses this as unenlightening, because the
terms detect and indicate basically mean to represent. Millikan refutes all of these notions so that she
can explain that the way a representation is used is what fixes the content, not how it was made. The
object of representation stands for something because there is

The Field By John Keane
The Field is a story written by John Keane and is about a farmer who is very poor and owns a piece of
land. He is renting a field from a woman who has now become a widow and is interested in selling the
land at an auction. Because she decides to sell the land at an expensive price, the poor farmer Bull
Mccabe is pushed into a very uncomfortable situation in which his desperation gets the best of him,
which ultimately leads to his involvement in a murder. A question arises from this man s predicament:
Were his actions acceptable? Just because someone becomes helplessly desperate, doesn t mean that
they must commit murder in order to fulfill their temporary desires. I believe that what Bull Maccabe
has done was a result pure desperation which was not in any way justifiable. Murder is a line that
should never be crossed except in particular circumstances. Ethically, it wouldn t be feasible to argue
taking someone s life unless it is to defend your own. The idea of murder is concept that globally, is
well understood as undeniably wrong. It should only be used as a last resort or self defense, as in the
act of war. Only in these situations would killing someone be an option. Not only are these cases ones
where you can no guilt afterwards, but you wouldn t even face the repercussions. Bull is so frustrated
with how he s going to lose his valuable land that he even calls William a thief: Now this robber
comes from nowhere and he s nothing less than a robber . The author here

Jesus Christ As The Center Of Discipleship
When someone think about Jesus Christ being the center of discipleship there are two things that
comes to mind; change and commitment within the disciple. One day Jesus Christ was walking by the
sea of Galilee when He saw Simon and Andrew fishing; he said to them, Follow me and I will make
you fishers of men Matthew 4:19 . The next verse show them immediately dropping their nets and
followed Jesus Christ. The actions of Simon and Andrew is described best by Putman, Harrington, and
Coleman in the text book Disciple Shift. The text breaks Matthew 4:19 into three key elements; which
are Following Christ, is being changed by Christ, and is committed to the mission of Christ . It is the
intent of this paper to show the importance of Jesus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Romans 8:29, For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his

Obedience is defined as defined by the American Heritage College thesaurus, The quality, state, or act

obedience is a key factor, but we cannot do it alone we need the help of the Holy Spirit. The Holy

Passive Resistance
Rather than simply influencing society, peaceful resistance is a mark of freedom itself. Therefore, its
impacts are neither positive nor negative, but an inherent quality of a free society. However, laws
themselves may influence the people they govern either positively or negatively; reactions to these
laws then reflect any perceived intentions such as helping or hindering society. The qualities of
positivity or negativity rely on individual sentiments which then join in likeness and form factions.
These factions then view each other as either progressing or stunting the growth of society. Thomas
Jefferson distinguished between honest rebels and dishonest rebels (Mirkin); while people s motives
cannot always be truly known, passive resistance often portrays honest emotions. As citizens continue
to arm themselves with peaceful resistance, their sentiments reveal positive and negative effects, not
the action itself. On January 21, 2017, pro life supporters gathered in Washington, D. C. after the
Women s March (McMahon). This event marked the 44th annual protest against the Supreme Court
decision on Roe v. Wade (McMahon). The Court s decision struck down a state ban on abortion unless
the mother s life was at risk (McBride). Protestors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

movement. Also, the positive impacts of emotions displayed through civil disobedience outweigh any
negative ones. Citizens in action allow voices of the people to be heard and coincide with founding
American principles such as freedom of speech and liberty. America emerged from those who fueled
wars, both against unfair laws and unjust ideology. Although resistance may indicate divisions among
citizens, it creates the opportunity for conversation and unification. Reactions may be positive or
negative, but peaceful resistance must be encouraged to have a free

Introduction to the Mining Industry
The mining sector is made up of organisations whose primary activity is the extraction of naturally
occurring mineral solids or natural resources. Examples of these types of minerals are coal, ores and
precious stones. The mining industry also broadly covers quarrying and well operations. The sector
comprises two basic activities: mine operations and mining support activities.
Mine operations involve setting up the mine, quarry or well for the organization, or on behalf of
another organization for a small fee.
Mining support activities are those operations that must be carried out before mining begins;
exploration and other services (except site preparation and construction of oil/gas pipelines).
The mining and metal industry is made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore there will always be a demand for mining products. There are not too many competitors as
certain materials can only be mined in specific areas.
Supplier power
Supplier power is quite high in mining as most of the worlds mines are owned, or part owned, by three
of the largest mining companies in the world; Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Anglo American.
Also, as mining is one of the primary activities, there are not many suppliers. The only possible
exception is that of the machinery suppliers, but since this is so specialized, they will have little power
over the huge multinational corporations that are the mining companies. The suppliers of mining
equipment, for example Caterpillar, have little power because contracts with mining companies go in
to millions of dollars and those who supply equipment don t want to lose any potential customers.
Threat of entry
In the mining industry the treat of entry is very small this is due to the extensive capital needed in
order to start operating a mine.
Costs include:
Training of employers and staff.
A strong team of well paid engineers, scientists and managers.
The cost of the machinery.
Maintenance costs.

Hofstede S Cultural Dimensions
Growth of research addressing the relationship between culture and consumption is exponential. Thus,
culture s influence on consumption and marketing had drawn increasing attention in recent years.
Hofstede s framework is the most widely used national cultural framework in psychology, sociology,
marketing and management studies. His dimensions were all constructed in such a way that they
addressed basic problems that all societies have to deal with. Thus, these dimensions of national
culture were constructed at the national level namely:
PDI: Power Distance Index
IDV: Individualism versus collectivism
MAS: Masculinity versus Femininity
UAI: Uncertainty Avoidance Index
In 1991, a fifth dimension has been added LTO Long Term versus ... Show more content on

The third dimension is MAS, where masculinity cultures such as Japan, Austria, Venezuela value
achievement and success; whereas femininity cultures such as Sweden and Norway stress caring for
others, interpersonal relationships and quality of life. Regarding the MAS index, Crotts and Erdmann
(2000) found visitors from less masculine cultures to be less critical and forgiving when evaluating
travel services compared with visitors from more masculine cultures, who are more assertive and
judgmental and evaluate airline service quality less positively and are less loyal to airlines.
UAI reflects the extent to which people feel threatened by uncertainty or ambiguity and try to avoid
these situations. Money and Crotts (2003) found that visitors from high uncertainty avoidance cultures
(e.g. Greece) engage in significantly more risk or uncertainty reducing behaviors such as purchasing
more often prepaid tour packages, travel in larger groups, stay for shorter periods, and visit fewer
destinations than their low uncertainty avoidance German counterparts when traveling internationally.
LTO refers to the preference for instant reward versus delayed reward. Countries such as Taiwan,
Japan, South Korea are long term orientated and stress thrift, hard work, dedication and savings. On
the other hand, cultures such as Pakistan are short term orientated that focus on tradition and social
obligations.
IND refers to the extent to which

Kurt Vonnegut Research Paper
Kurt Vonnegut s works were affected by his dark viewpoint on human existence, that death is
inevitable and his lack of trust, but are most well known for his use of black humor to express it. Kurt
Vonnegut s most famous books included Slaughterhouse Five, Cat s Cradle, and Breakfast of
Champions, but he wrote many others. According to Kurt Vonnegut Jr. , Vonnegut s writing style was
considered postmodernism. Postmodernism is the use of choppy, vernacular sentences that go against
traditional rules of plot, theme, time, and character development. He demonstrated social myths and
viewed the world differently with new ideas and thoughts (5). Cat s Cradle said, [Kurt Vonnegut used]

Kurt Vonnegut is known for his use of black humor and his humorous way of looking at something
sad or serious often in his books. Criticism for his most popular book, Slaughterhouse Five, included
questions of Vonnegut s Moral Indifference and as Michael Crichton said, [Vonnegut] refuses to say
who is wrong... ascribes no blame, sets no penalties ( qtd in Telegan and Hile 269). Similarly, Lev
Grossman spoke of Vonnegut saying that his opinion of human nature was low, and that the author
was endlessly disappointed in humanity (qtd in Cat s Cradle 70). People even suggested that his
frequent repetition of distinctive phrases, use of colloquialisms, and his digressive manner became
overused and uninspired over time ( Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. 6). Although he was criticized by some as
pessimistic, others observe that aspects of his work counter his gloomy worldview. Vonnegut s humor
was loved by his readers, and helped him stand out from other generic works of his time. As Telegan
and Hile quote Robert Scholes, [Vonnegut s humor] does not disguise the awful things perceived; it
merely strengthens and comforts us to the point where such perception is bearable . Robert Scholes
also considered his novel, Slaughterhouse Five, to be an extraordinary success... a book we need to
read, and to reread... funny, compassionate, and wise (264). Vonnegut s writing style set him apart
from other authors, and also kept more negative criticism off hi back. He received lots of praise from
many people for his outstanding, different, and interesting works. Terry Southern wrote in 1963,
following the publication of Vonnegut s book Cat s Cradle, to be far more engaging and meaningful
other than the melodramatic tripe which most critics seem to consider serious ( Cat s Cradle 69). In

Communication In Autistic Children
The definition as well as the symptoms of autism have been mentioned in the previous part of the
research proposal. Symptoms of autism will usually start showing when a child is around 18months
(Hourigan Hourigan, 2009:40). The main problem concerning autism that this literature study will
focus on is the delay and defect with regards to communication in the autistic child with specific
reference to the classroom situation.
Extensive studies have been done on the autistic spectrum disorder. These children will be introverted
and usually live their lives in an isolated world. They struggle with many different aspects of everyday
life which causes them to retreat into their comfort zone of seclusion. Educators and teachers should
strive to understand this comfort zone in order to be able to relate and communicate effectively with
these children. Autistic children struggle to relate with one another, communications are extremely
difficult. Different strategies should be implemented to encourage and help autistic learners to
communicate more effectively with one another and with their teachers to facilitate teaching and
learning in the classroom. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

have an effect on the ability of people with autism to memorise nonvisual material . Clearly, autistic
children have a strong affinity towards music. The fact that children with autism display special
interest and ability in music has led to the question whether music can t play a role in the

Jean Piaget s Developments Of Human Cognitive Development
Jean Piaget was the first Swiss psychologist to study the systematic human cognitive development. He
was fascinated about how the way children think and how children gain their knowledge as they grow
up. His studies help him to understand that children s cognitive development changes as they mature
and with the experiences they learn in the environment. Cognitive development is the development of
memory, thinking, and problem solving (Ciccarelli, 2012). With his studies, he proposed that cognitive
development occurs in 4 age related stages: sensorimotor, pre operational, concrete operations, and
formal operations (Leifer, 2015). The pre operational stage is the early childhood development ages
between 2 to 7 years old. Children in this stage are very focused on learning their symbolic thought,
especially concepts and language. They assume the very stereotypical act of a child, believing in
fantastical characters like the Easter bunny and his ilk and believing that the act of locomotion means
that something has life. They can imagine to a basic extent and are capable of using items as symbols
for other items. Piaget claimed that children in this stage experience egocentrism, which refers to
inability to see the world through anyone else s eyes (Ciccarelli, 2012). Children are self centered and
they think that world entirely from their own personal perspective. They also focus mostly on
appearances when concerning logic and they basically understand only the things

Correlation Between Music and IQ in Children Essay
1. Introduction
This project investigates the effect which the playing of a musical instrument namely the drums has on
one s intelligence and academic ability. A search of the literature reveals that studies of this kind have
been conducted by other researchers in many parts of the world and has led to the conclusion that
music is an extremely healthy activity to be involved in.
A study conducted on school children in America concluded that children who took voice or piano
lessons had higher IQ s at the end of the year than those who did not (Munsey, 2006). Dye (2012)
reinforces this, stating that scientific research shows that studying music improves school

Yume Essay
In the film Yume (or with the English translation) Dreams , Director Akira Kurosawa, plays with
morality and the preservation of natural life. Yume presents the viewer with vignettes that focus on the
consequences of human behavior, like in the short: The Peach Orchard. In this vignette, a boy is
questioned in front of a spiritual council that represented the chopped down peach orchard. The spirits
were angry with how mortals treat nature, but the boy repented for his family s actions. In return the
spirits led him in a facade, letting him see the traditional dance of the falling peach blossom petals.
The boy was amazed, but it was soon cut short when the dance was over, for the visage he was seeing
ended and he was back in the orchard with all the chopped down trees. The point of this short was to
display that people often destroy nature and dirty the earth and give it nothing in return. There is
consequences to every action, and there is more to the earth than what appears. The terrible treatment

In the past unit we have discussed about poleis and compared how free men, in both, Sparta and

Two Sisters Of Persephone Sylvia Plath Literary Devices
Through the use of distinct opposites, Sylvia Plath is able to create two different mood in her poem,
Two Sisters of Persephone. The concept of two moods is set up in the poem s first stanza: daylong a
duet of shade and light, (2). This line suggests a battle between light and dark. Light being a metaphor
for and hope and happiness and darkness a metaphor for depression and sadness. Already, it s obvious
that there are two distinct females who are representative of different concepts. The first girl, who has
a, root pale...meager frame, (12) is obviously darkness. She s weak and pale which suggests hunger or
deprivation of some sort. There s no doubt that this fact contributes to the darkness portrayed by the
first female. It also seems as though she is dying. This death could be a sort of hyperbole to explain
what s happening within her or it could be literal. The girl of darkness, sees how their red silk flare / of

Political Party Issues
Political Party Issues In political campaigns, the viewpoints of the individual candidates are often
reflective of the positions of their political parties. In the upcoming presidential election, there are
issues which have the power to divide the nation. One of the most divisive issues at present is the
question of gay marriage and whether or not the federal government should weigh in on what has thus
far been a states rights issue. Both on the state and national levels, the perspective of the people in the
various political jurisdictions will determine the way in which they vote. If a party agrees with the
population s view on an issue, the people will be more likely to vote with that party. The two major
parties, the Republicans and Democrats, have officially been against gay marriage although a few
have differed from the party s position. Less is known where some of the third parties, such as the
Green Party, Libertarian Party, and Constitution Party, stand on the issue. I support same sex marriage
because I see no valid arguments against it. The majority of arguments against gay marriage are based
on religious perspective. In the United States, the First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees
separation of church and state. Therefore, religion should not have a place in either the formulation or
implementation of legislation, including questions of who has the right to get married in this country.
The Green Party was founded with the intention of making

Analysis Of The Play By Lin Manuel Miranda s Hamilton
Patiences is a Virtue
In the play created by Lin Manuel Miranda called Hamilton we learn an astounding amount of
different lessons as diverse as from the importance of family to patience. Miranda uses the characters
in the play to convey the importance of patience is a variety of ways. Hamilton, Washington, and
Angelica all have a conflict with patience in this extraordinary play. What separates each of these
characters conflicts with patience is their individualized struggle with the challenge of patience itself,
and their ability or inability to successfully contain the impulse of losing control which is represented
numerous times in the play.
Alexander Hamilton is portrayed as a young man hungry for the chance to leave his mark on history.
At birth, Hamilton was subject to challenges due to his parents inability to care for him. In the opening
song the introduction of hamilton s struggle as a child is presented to us through narration. The play
begins, How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a scotsman...impoverished, in squalor grow
up to be a hero and a scholar ( Alexander Hamilton 0:08)? Hamilton s correlation with patience is so
prevalent in this quote because, as you see here, without the patience to overcome the challenge that
an orphan faces such as the absence of a true parent figure, there would be no story to tell. Hamilton
overcomes the odds he faced as a young child and as stated, becomes a hero and a scholar. Hamilton
also shows an inability to

Analysis Of Argument Against Headphones By Virginia Heffernan
Analysis of Argument Against Headphones A century has passed since the creation of headphones, yet
they have only recently come under fire. Headphones provide a way for people to listen to music,
audiobooks, and podcasts privately without disrupting others around them. However, all of this private
listening may soon fall on deaf ears. In Virginia Heffernan s article Against Headphones , she presents
an argument stating that although headphones are useful in some professions, they cause substantial
hearing loss, especially in young people. The formulated argument is effective and valid, and
incorporates ethos, logos, and opposing viewpoints with rebuttals.

Heffernan as a reasonable author with a deep understanding of her subject matter, which earns the

logical premise in support of prohibiting headphones, the author sheds light on the harsh reality of
headphone use: more young people experience hearing loss. When discussing the history of
headphones, the author states, workers and soldiers have long used [headphones] to mute out the din
of machinery or artillery while receiving one way orders from someone with a microphone
(Heffernan, 2011). Heffernan recognizes a factual use of headphones while at the same time
acknowledging that headphones are useful in some instances, which helps to strengthen her argument.
Heffernan then goes on to say, headphone users who listen to

Secular Humanism Rejects The Idea And Existence Of God
Secular humanism rejects the idea and existence of God. It is a philosophy of life, which views that
humans are the supreme beings of the universe. They believe that the creation of the universe and life
is an incredible coincidence. They believe that human existence is fully explained without any
references to spiritual occurrences. Secular humanists have no religion and reject the idea of faith and
spirituality. They believe that science is the only source of knowledge and reveals the laws of nature
and is measurable.
Does God exist?
Catholic view
Through out history people have believed in God and have practiced religion. Religion provides
meaning for people and it helps people answer the existential questions of life and also gives people a
purpose bigger than their own. Christians believe that God shows us the way to meaning and purpose.
There are three arguments for the existence of god the ontological, cosmological and religious
experience. Ontological argument is for God is based on the ideas about nature of being, existence and
reality. This argument is based entirely on reason. You shouldn t have to go out and looking for
physical evidence that God existence we can work out that God exists just by thinking about it.
According to this argument God is perfection. God is all powerful and something can t be called God
unless it is perfect.
Aquinas who was one of the greatest Christian theologians explains the cosmological explanation.
Aquinas takes the existence

Theme Of Guilt In Macbeth
In literary history, guilt plays a major role. The nature of and effects of guilt can be heavily weighted
at times in both texts. In Macbeth we see plenty of guilt that mostly stems from the macbeth
household and the audience then witnesses the true effects of guilt. In To kill a mockingbird the guilt
stems from a very afraid Mayella who is a transparent character that the audience soon sees that she
holds the weight of a very guilty conscience. In each of the text the audience follows where the guilt
flows and see the true effects of what guilt can do. In Macbeth and To kill a mockingbird the pair of
villains in both texts follow a parallel course of action in which they sacrifice the innocent for their
own gain, and are not yet satisfied, are ultimately destroyed by their guilty actions.
In macbeth and to kill a mockingbird, the audience witnesses how the pairs of villains sacrifice the
innocent for what they want. In macbeth there are three major events that happen. The death of King
Duncan is one example where innocence was sacrificed. Lady Macbeth and macbeth plot to kill King
Duncan to make Macbeth king instead. When macbeth is finally king, there is a so called prophecy
that banquo is going to be the one to father a line of kings. So once again Macbeth puts himself in a
situation where he sacrifices an innocent man, that also happens to be his best friend, to make sure he
doesn t get involved in macbeth s royal life. Finally when macbeth learns that Macduff is a danger to
him, he orders for Macduff s family to be murdered. Macbeth sacrificed an innocent family so that he
wouldn t be harmed.
In to kill a mockingbird, Mayella Ewell and Bob Ewell sacrifice the innocence of a man to protect
themselves and their reputation. Mayella tells a tale of a man named Tom Robinson doing a socially
unacceptable action. Rape. The audience sees that mayella is afraid of her father when Atticus
questions Bob about the incident. Instead of being honest and calm, she throws out whatever she
thinks will defend her as well as insults. I got somethin to say an the I ain t gonna say no more. That
nigger yonder took advantage of me an if you fine fancy gentlemen don t wanta do nothin about it

The Contamination Of The Spinach Field Essay
We all know that poor and dirty conditions lead to the accumulation of bacteria and other health
risking factors. It is a violation of policy for health codes. This can be seen in the Mountain View
Farms most likely due to the fact that they grew the spinach in unfavorable conditions. There is a
possibility that the spinach field came into contact with the STEC O157:H7 through outside sources
due to the fact that they were exposed in dangerous conditions in outside environments instead of
being grown in a facility that is enclosed. In order to save and cut costs of manufacturing spinach, the
farm most likely planted their spinach outside. While this practice is common, it is also unsafe as
pollutants from other manufacturing companies and farms can wash down into the spinach field. In
this scenario, according to the map of nearby industries, there are a few sources that could have
exposed the spinach field to STEC O157:H7. The Floyd s Pork Farm is the most suspected source as
the dangerous strain of E. Coli can be contracted from the animals through their food source and
passed through their fecal matter. The feces are then washed into nearby water systems by the rain and
might not be filtered and processed completely before being used. In this case, the water that was
infected is being used for the irrigation system to water and grow the spinach and other crops. Now
the spinach has the E. Coli strain and then being harvested to be bagged and sold off to the consumers.

An Analysis Of Lancelot s Abandonment Of The Epic
Emily Jessen 010533719
Professor Watt
History 101
June 11 2015
Abandonment of the Epic The compilation of Chretien de Troyes Arthurian Romances effectively
portrays various themes previously unexplored in the epic genre that eventually led to the creation of
Lancelot in The Knight of the Cart and later Perceval in his unfinished work, The Story of the Grail .
Lancelot becomes the good example of romantic mythology through his internal struggles while still
remaining loyal to his liege. The early epics contain many common themes and morals despite having
been found throughout different civilizations such as the Old English Beowulf, the Greek works of
The Odyssey and The Iliad by Homer, and the ancient Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh. In ... Show

Lancelot has defining human characteristics that separate him from the deified accounts of epic poem
protagonists, and this shift to vulnerability created a new writing style that reflected the times as
Europe was slowly becoming less centralized. Since the innocent days of Perceval s youth, he had
wanted to become a knight after recklessly chasing after a few with a javelin, and this tale of maturity
is similar to the works of Dickens and other tales of growing up . The tragic Greek hero or man of
myth portrayed in the epic tales that became immediate folklore for nations across the globe was no
more. Every country had its great epic hero, but the rise of romantic writings led to each country being
able to rediscover itself through a different set of eyes. Perceval and Lancelot could never have been
epic heroes, and the actions of Perceval and Lancelot could never be portrayed in an epic poem
without seeming humorous. Oedipus would never ride in the back of a pillory cart to reach his
destination, and Lancelot would never find himself in a situation where he has to kill his own father
and wed his mother. It is evident that the early romantic works take heavy influence from epic poetry
as the characters may seem to be chivalrous and intimidating at first, but unlike the protagonists of

The Aztecs And The Aztec Religion
During what is to be believed around 15,000 years ago, civilization was starting to develop around
North and South America. One of the last societies to arise were the Aztecs. The Aztecs originated
from groups of people that were migrating from a lake named, Aztlan, towards the valley of Mexico.
They transformed from just a small group of explores into a successful empire during this time. Aztecs
had a very unique culture, their religion influenced most of their life. Their religion was expressed
through their rituals, everyday life, and art. Even before they settled down, the Aztecs depended on
their Gods to guide them to choose the perfect location for them. That is an illustration of how much
the trusted and respected their Gods.
The Aztec religion had a mix of mythology which is seen through the Aztecs God s uprising story and
their significance. In the Aztecs religion, the people had multiple gods that they observed and prayed
to. Their Gods ranged from nature spirts to supporter of the Gods. One of their Gods, was named
Quetzalcoatl. This deity represented the four major aspects of their forces, their creation, virtue,
learning and culture. Another influential God was Tlaloc, the God of rain. Tlaloc was a representation
of the atmosphere and everything that happened that was impacted by the weather. Along with the
Gods representing significant topics, the stories that led to that unique spirt becoming a God
influenced their life as well.
Let s begin with a God that

Fear and Confusion in films Psycho and Carrie Essay
Fear and Confusion in films Psycho and Carrie
In horror films, there is always one scene that opens up the perceived realm of normality to that of fear
and confusion. Directors and authors alike use these scenes to show the change in the pace of the film.
In both the movie Psycho (1960) and Carrie (1976), shower scenes are used to mark this epic turning
point with sexuality, blood and voyeurism; the most important ingredients to horror.
The idea of sneaking around and peering into forbidden places gives just about everyone a thrill.
Voyeurism is used strongly in both Psycho and Carrie due to its ability to entice thrill in the viewer. In
Carrie, we start the scene by looking into a girls high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We are then given an extreme close up of Norman s eye, staring wide into the room; the view we have
gives us the thrill of actually being there, watching Marion undress. This method of filming, giving the
audience the sight of the forbidden, adds thrill to the important scenes. Thrill only encourages us to
watch the movie more intently, on the edge of our seats.
Sexuality also adds a great deal of tension to the two scenes. We watch as Marion drops her robe to
the floor and steps gingerly into the shower. Once in the shower, we are given a point of view shot of
the showerhead, a huge showerhead covering her entire body with clean, warm water, cleansing her of
her sins in an almost baptismal way. We are allowed only collarbone up shots of her in the shower,
only hints to her nakedness. We can only imagine what she looks like, giving the audience the same
thoughts that raced through Norman s mind as he looked in on her through the peephole. Carrie is also
highly sexualized, more so given the fact that more nudity was allowed with the changing times. As
we gaze at the different close up camera shots of her body, we watch as she reaches for the soap. The
audience watches as she rubs soap all over her body in slow motion, her face complacent in both
peace and pleasure. Carrie then begins to rub her breasts and her inner thigh in a very
