About This Presentation

Grade 7 Type of Graphs

Slide Content

QUARTER 4 WEEKS 4 – 5

Today you are expected to: Use appropriate graphs to represent organized data Present data using: Pie c hart bar graph line graph Histogram Ogive

Recall

Graph is an effective way in presenting data than a mass number, it used to present a visual picture of the data gathered. This can be done using the different kinds of graphs.

Pie Charts

Pie charts show data as proportional sectors of a circle. It is a circle divided into a parts or sectors that are proportional to the size of corresponding frequencies or percentages. To get the angle of each sector we use: Angle of sector = frequency ___ x 360 Total Frequency Pie Charts

Pie charts show discrete data as proportional sectors of a circle. Every sector of a pie chart is a proportion of the whole. You can explain what each sector represents using an angle, fraction or percentage. Being able to convert between fractions, percentages and angles is a key skill for answering questions about data presented in a pie chart.   Pie Charts

Pie Charts

Based on the Pie Graph, answer the following questions: 1. What is the most preferred activity of the students during weekends? 2. What is the least preferred activity? 3. What is the percentage of the students doing house chores? 4. What is the percentage of the students who loved to have bonding with their family during weekends ? 5. What is the percentage of the students surfing internet during weekends?

Bar Graph

a graph which uses horizontal or vertical bars to represent data. The length of the bars represents a quantity. The bars should be of the same width and should be shaped out evenly Bar Graph

a graph which uses horizontal or vertical bars to represent data. The length of the bars represents a quantity. The bars should be of the same width and should be shaped out evenly A bar graph has a horizontal axis and a vertical axis. A bar graph must always have a title explaining what it shows. Bars must be carefully drawn to show the data. There must be a gap between each bar. Each bar must be the same width . Bar Graph

The scale of this number line is chosen based on the data range. The data categories are organized on the horizontal axis. Each axis must have a label explaining what it shows. Bar Graph

Line Graph

Line graphs are used to show changes to a measurement over time. They show continuous data . Line Graph

Line graphs are used to show changes to a measurement over time. They show continuous data . Line Graph Example: The table shows Chloe’s Savings for 4 weeks.

Line graphs are used to show changes to a measurement over time. They show continuous data . Line Graph Example: The table shows Chloe’s Savings for 4 weeks.

Line graphs are used to show changes to a measurement over time. They show continuous data . The data being measured is shown on the vertical axis. The time the data is being measured over is shown on the horizontal axis. Line Graph Example: The table shows Chloe’s Savings for 4 weeks.

Data is plotted on to a line graph in the same way as a coordinate grid. These data plots are then joined with straight lines. Line graphs are used to show changes to a measurement over time. They show continuous data . The data being measured is shown on the vertical axis. The time the data is being measured over is shown on the horizontal axis. Line Graph Example: The table shows Chloe’s Savings for 4 weeks.

They show continuous data . The data being measured is shown on the vertical axis. The time the data is being measured over is shown on the horizontal axis. We can use the line of the graph to describe general trends in the change of the measurement over time, or to find precise measurements at a given time. Line Graph Example: The table shows Chloe’s Savings for 4 weeks.

It is a graph that make use of vertical bars to represent frequencies. The bars in the histogram are of the same width. There are no spaces between them. Steps in constructing Histogram 1. Determine the class boundaries 2. Draw x and y axes 3. Indicate the class boundaries on the x-axis and the frequencies on the axis 4. Draw vertical bars whose heights correspond to the frequencies for each class. Histogram Example: The following data shows the scores in a 20 -Item test Score in Science

Histogram A Bar Chart Sales of Paddling Pools per quarter A Frequency Diagram 2 4 6 8 10 Time taken to complete a Table Test Time in Minutes 1 2 3 4 5 6 Frequency Spot the differences from a bar chart to a frequency diagram: There are no gaps between the bars The horizontal axis has a continuous scale as it represents continuous data The width of the bars is the full width of the class interval The class intervals (the width of the bars) is the same for all bars

An ogive is a graph that represents cumulative frequencies of a data set. It is constructed from a cumulative frequency histogram. Ogive Step 1: Draw a Cumulative Relative Frequency Histogram

An ogive is a graph that represents cumulative frequencies of a data set. It is constructed from a cumulative frequency histogram. Ogive Step 2: Draw the Ogive Curve

An ogive is a graph that represents cumulative frequencies of a data set. It is constructed from a cumulative frequency histogram. Ogive Step 3: Remove the Histogram (optional)

Use a bar graph if you want to show relationships between groups. Choosing the Right Graph

Use a bar graph if you want to show relationships between groups. Choosing the Right Graph Use a pie chart if you need to compare different parts of a whole, there is NO time involved and there are NOT too many items (or categories)

Use a bar graph if you want to show relationships between groups. Choosing the Right Graph Use a pie chart if you need to compare different parts of a whole, there is NO time involved and there are NOT too many items (or categories) Use a line graph if you need to see how a quantity has changed over time. Line graphs enable us to find trends (or patterns) over time.
