Solving Problems involving Fractions, Decimals and Percent b y: Rosa P. Garello

LESSON OBJECTIVES: To identify base, rate and percentage To solve problems involving fractions, decimals and percent using P = B x R

ACTIVITY: CHANGE ME Pick a strip of paper inside the box and try to change it using the prescribed conversion. Explain how did you get the correct answer.

Cite practical examples involving fractions/decimals/percent that you have already encountered Some examples are: computation of costs sales discounts interest rates (simple/compound interest rates) comparing costs of different brands of the same product given in different measures cooking a recipe for a different number of its usual servings (suppose you want to have 15 servings using a recipe that is only good for 5 servings) conversion peso to dollars or other foreign currency

EXAMPLES: If you were ask to buy kilos of pork which costs P 275 per kilo, how much should you pay and how much will your change be if you pay a 1000 peso bill?

I f a shirt’s original price is P1000 and there’s a 20% discount, how much is the discount?

Use the percentage formula to find the unknown value when two values are known. P = R x B

Identify the rate, base and percentage in percentage problems: In the formula P = R x B: “B” refers to the base which is the original number or one entire quantity. “P” refers to percentage and represents a portion of the base. “R” refers to rate and is a percent that tells us how the base and percentage are related.

Find the percentage: What are you looking for? H ow much is the discount? 2 . What do you know? The base is 1000 (rate); and the rate is 20% or 0.20 . 3. Solution plan P = 1000 x 0.20

4. Solve P = 200 5. Conclude The discount is P200.00

What is 23% of P365? If I have P25.00 which represents ¼ of my entire money, how much money do I have in all? P125 is 15% of what amount? Try these problem:

Try these problem: The quality control team inspected a total output of 2350 finished products and rejected for recycling 248 defective finished products. What percent was the rejected finished products ? P85 is what percent of P2850?

GROUP ACTIVIY: The class will be divided into 6 groups. Each group will be given a worksheet for them to work on. It is good for 10 minutes. Each group will be rated using this rubrics:

3 2 1 Accuracy All the answers are correct Some of the answers are correct Little to none of the answers are correct Timeliness Finished the task on or before the given time limit Finished the task 1-5 minutes after the given time limit Finished the task 6-10 minutes after the given time limit Cooperation All members contribute 4-7 members contribute 1-3 members contribute

THANK YOU & GODBLESS!!!
