A Group and Its Characteristics Input A group is a collection of individuals who coordinate their individual efforts but a group may evolve into a team if those groups of people share a common purpose and a number of challenging goals. Members of the team are mutually committed to achieve the goals and to each other. Without purpose and goals, you cannot build a team This mutual commitment also creates joint accountability which creates a strong bond and a strong motivation to perform. The ability of a group to work well together often depends on group cohesion . It allows a group to work together through conflict and emerge as a stronger group. In a Harvard Business review article, the authors view group cohesion as showing cooperation and coordination among group members.

Group Cohesiveness Input Cohesiveness defines the degree of closeness that the members feel with the group. It identifies the strength of the member’s desires to remain in the group and the degree of commitment to the group. The extent of cohesiveness depends upon many factors including the compatibility of individual goals with group goals. https://www.manage-mentstudyhq.com/group-cohesiveness.html

Dimension of Group Cohesion Input Emotional (or personal) -is derived from the connection that members feel to other group members and to their group as a whole. That is, how much do members like to spend time with other group members and do they look forward to the next group meeting

Dimension of Group Cohesion Input Task-related -refers to the degree to which group members share group goals and work together to meet these goals. That is, is the group works smoothly as one unit, or pull in different directions.

Consequences of Group Cohesiveness Input Some of the consequences of group cohesiveness are group members are highly participative. The group also will experience more conformity, high productivity, more success, more influence, more communication and more personal satisfaction. This level of group cohesiveness may evolve into engaging a higher level of commitment which leads towards the formation of a Self-Help Group (SHG)

What is Self-Help Groups (SHs) Input Self-help group is an informal group of people who come together to address their common problems. It is also known as mutual help, mutual aid, or support groups. While self-help might imply a focus on the individual, one important characteristic of self-help groups is the idea of mutual support – people helping each other. Self-help groups can serve many different purposes depending on the situation and the need. Within the development sector, self-help groups have been used as an effective strategy for poverty alleviation, human development and social empowerment, and are therefore often focused on microcredit programmes and income-generating activities.

WHAT ARE THE SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES ONE MUST POSSESS TO EFFECTIVELY ORGANIZE AND LEAD A SELF -HELP GROUP? Willingness to maintain a close working relationship with members and to be a team player Empathetic and approachable Active participation in all group activities Strength in the areas of communication, group facilitation, organization and management

Dedication to the SHG mission, and a desire to make a difference Openness to learning new ideas on approaches to group management strategies Personal relationship with group members Ability to empower and motivate group participants

These are some common characteristics of self-help groups: Voluntary nature – they are run by and for group members, have regular meetings, and are open to new members; Generally being formed in response to a particular issue, e.g. no access to education for children with disabilities, limited income-generating opportunities; Clear goals , which originate from the needs of group members and are known and shared by all members; Informal structure and basic rules, regulations and guidelines to show members how to work effectively together;

These are some common characteristics of self-help groups: Participatory nature – involving getting help, sharing knowledge and experience, giving help, and learning to help oneself; Shared responsibility among group members – each member has a clear role and contributes his/her share of resources to the group; Democratic decision-making ; Governance by members , using an external facilitator only if necessary in the formation of the group; Evolution over time to address a broader range of issues; Possibility of joining together to form a federation of groups across a wider area.

You can always grow once you get the hang of things.

HOW TO ORGANIZE A SELF-HELP GROUP A- Assess possible needs and resources Figure out how people in your community are being impacted by the crisis/situation. What do they need? What can other people offer? These types of questions will help your group identify the best ways to support each other and it’s a great opportunity to build relationships. Other questions to consider: Who lives in your community? How are they being impacted by crisis/situation“ What are people struggling with? What support do they need? What resources do people have to offer? Who is interested in joining the group?

Group cohesion is the foundation of Self-Help Group, so re- member that everyone is being impacted by this crisis and all have different experiences. You might ask, “How can this core group show up for each other, while also supporting others?”

In your existing group, how cohesive are you with your group, describe it through a rating with 1 as the lowest and 5 as the highest 4. Is possible for you to create a Self-Help Group? 5. If not? Why? What are the possible hindrances? What are the needed skills or assistance to create a Self-Help Group? 6. If yes. What kind of group (ex. Livelihood, Mortuary Aid, Medical Aid and etc.)? How? When? Who are the possible members? Each group will be given 3 minutes to present their output. After the presentation of each group a creative clap will be given to recognize their participation and efforts. Activity: Group Discussion
