Rhetoric is the art of persuasion, and aims to study the techniques that speakers or writers use to inform , persuade , and motivate their audiences. It is often split up into five aspects or canons . Rhetoric
Speakers use inventio when they begin the thought process of forming and developing an effective argument. Inventio - Invention Dispositio - Organization S electing various arguments and organizing them into an effective discourse.
Speakers use elocutio when determining such things as level of style, virtues of style, and figures of style. Elocutio - Style Level Plain : for instruction Middle : for “moving oration” High : for “charming discourse ” Virtue Correctness : ensuring there are errors such as bad grammar Clearness : using words in common meanings Appropriateness : saying whatever fits in a given situation Ornamentation : extraordinary use of language Figures Figures of speech/rhetorical devices: metaphors, alliteration, artful word repetition, oxymorons, aporia, derision, enthymemes, hyperbole, innuendo, irony, understatement, metonyms, and many, many others.
