DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS)

What are HOTS? How are we going to develop them? DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS)

HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) is a concept popular in American education. It distinguishes critical thinking skills from low-order learning outcomes, such as those attained by rote memorization. DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) What is HOTS?

CRITICAL THINKING DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) The ability analyze and interpret information The ability to evaluate ideas To make decisions To solve problem

Analyzing Evaluating Creating DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) Where are these people? What are they doing? Why? Why do you think they can’t use Their phones to make phone calls? How would you communicate with the following people; Your school friends, your family, people who leave far away? Let’s look at the photo and discuss. MAKING CONTACT

HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) is a concept popular in American education. It distinguishes critical thinking skills from low-order learning outcomes, such as those attained by rote memorization. It is a way to help students think and not just memorize and also improve their cognitive ability. These skills come to us in the form of Bloom’s Taxonomy, which gives us a hierarchy of levels that create higher order thinking skills. DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS)

DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) is where students make judgments on information and find the validity of the idea or work. lets the students break information into bits and pieces by identifying the cause or affect and finding evidences to support their claims. a way for the students to solve problems by applying their knowledge and techniques. the understanding of facts and ideas by organizing, comparing, interpreting information that a student has learned It is basically the ability to remember previous learned material by recalling facts, terms, and basic answers Remembering Understanding Creating Analyzing Evaluating Applying  the students can combine information that they have together to create a new pattern or new solutions.

HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) HOTS is based on various taxonomies of learning, particularly the one created by Benjamin Bloom in his 1956 book, "Taxonomy of Educational Objectives: The Classification of Educational Goals." Higher-order thinking skills are reflected by the top three levels in Bloom’s Taxonomy: Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating . DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS)

DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) Analyzing The fourth level of Bloom's pyramid, involves students use their own judgment to begin analyzing the knowledge they have learned. At this point, they begin understanding the underlying structure of knowledge and also are able to distinguish between fact and opinion. Lets the students break information into bits and pieces by identifying the cause or affect and finding evidences to support their claims. Bloom’s Taxonomy Making Contact

DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) Analyzing Analyze each statement to decide whether it is fact or opinion. Compare and contrast the beliefs of an author to another author. Illustrate the differences between the American alligator and the Nile crocodile. Some questions of analysis would be: HOW ARE WE GOING TO DEVELOP THEM? Bloom’s Taxonomy Making Contact

DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) Evaluating This involves students making judgments about the value of ideas, items, and materials. In this level students are expected to mentally assemble all they have learned to make informed and sound evaluations of the material. Bloom’s Taxonomy Making Contact

DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) Evaluating Some questions involving evaluation might be: Evaluate the Bill of Rights and determine which is the least necessary for a free society. Attend a local play and write a critique of the actor’s performance. Visit an art museum and offer suggestions on ways to improve a specific exhibit. HOW ARE WE GOING TO DEVELOP THEM? Bloom’s Taxonomy Making Contact

DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) Creating The high-level thinking is when students put the parts of information they have reviewed together to create new meaning or a new structure. Combine information that they have together to create a new pattern or new solutions.  Bloom’s Taxonomy Making Contact

Making Contact DEVELOPING HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) Creating What alternative would you suggest for ___? What changes would you make to revise___?  What could you invent to solve___? HOW ARE WE GOING TO DEVELOP THEM? Some questions in the educational setting that would involve the synthesis level of higher-order thinking might include: Bloom’s Taxonomy
