WRITING CONCEPT PAPER
The EAPP Structure Reading Academic Texts Writing Critique/Review Writing Concept Paper Writing Position Paper Writing Technical/ Survey Report
What Am I? The teacher will give a definition or a description of an object. The participants will bring out from their bags and raise that object which they think is being defined or described. The teacher will give more specific definitions/descriptions until it is clear what the object is. Whoever has it wins the game.

Again, enumerate all the answers in the previous activity. In what lexical category do these words belong? Define this part of speech. Can we consider these ‘tangible’ nouns as concepts? Therefore, what are concepts? How can we create concept paper titles or topics from these tangible things? ANALYSIS 1
a general notion or idea; conception. 2. an idea of something formed by mentally combining all its characteristics or particulars; a construct. CONCEPT Source: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/concept?s=t
A Concept Paper Defines an idea or a concept and explains its essence in order to clarify the “whatness” of that idea or concept. It answers the questions: what is it and what about it? ( Dadufalza , 1996). Starts with a definition, either formal or informal, of the term or concept and proceeds with an expanded definition and an analytic description of the aspects of the concept.
Purpose To stipulate the meaning of a term by Limiting Extending or Redirecting the reference or sense in which the term is commonly understood or to use in a special way a term borrowed from another field in which it is made to apply ( Dadufalza , 1996).
What words can you associate with these?
Let’s Elucidate It! Choose among the words that were given in the previous activity (Guessing Game). 2. Make a mind map of your concept. 3. Decide on how you will elucidate on the chosen concept using the following definition techniques:
GROUP Definition Techniques 1 Formal and Negation 2 Origin and Metaphor 3 Function and Analysis 4 Analogy and Illustration 5 Contrast and Synonym
ANALYSIS To which fields do the concepts that were explained and clarified belong? What are the various ways by which a writer can elucidate on a concept ?
Ex. A robot is a machine that looks like a human being and performs complex acts of a human being (Webster) 1. FORMAL Follows a pattern or equation Term + genus + differentia (differentiating characteristics) ” “
Ex. Hashish-marijuana 2. By SYNONYM Using a word or phrase that shares a meaning with the term being defined ” “
3. By ORIGIN or SEMANTIC HISTORY Ex. Yoga comes from Sanskrit “to join” ” “
4. By ILLUSTRATION Ex. Known for shedding their leaves in the fall, deciduous, trees, include oaks, maples, and beeches ” “
5. By FUNCTION Ex. A thermometer measures temperature change ” “
6. By ANALYSIS Breaking down wholes into parts, aspects into levels, and a process into steps ” “ Ex. The republican form of government has three branches: the executive, the legislative, and the judiciary.
7. By LIKENESS OR SIMILARITY Ex. Brighter than 100 million suns, quasars stand like beacons on the shore of the universe ” “
8. By ANALOGY or METAPHOR Ex. The germs or bacteria or antigens are like a gang of villains invading our body, attacking our unseen defenders, the layers of macrophages, cytokines, and lymphocytes ” “
9. By CONTRAST Ex. Unlike those of gas, the particles of plasma are electrically charged. ” “
10. By NEGATION Stating what a term is not ” “ Ex. Wild rice, an American delicacy, is not rice at all but the seed of a tall aquatic grass.
Learning Competencies (Writing a Concept Paper) The learner… 1. defines what a concept paper is 2. determines the ways a writer can elucidate on a concept by definition, explication and clarification 3. identifies situations in which a concept paper may be effectively used to improve our society 4. comprehends various kinds of concept papers 5. explains and clarifies concepts in fields such as: Art, Business, Law, Philosophy, Politics , Religion, Science, Sports, TechVoc , Home Economics , Agri. Fishery, I.A , ICT, etc. 6.presents a novel concept or project with accompanying visuals/ graphic aids
Let’s Dissect It! Each group will be given a text representing a kind concept paper. Provide meta cards, let them identify the following: topic; problem; and solution. Allot 20 minutes for each group to read the assigned text and answer using the meta cards given. Reconvene the groups for the presentation of their task.
Aspect Answers Topic Problem Solution
ANALYSIS 3 What is the purpose of the concept paper? How can it help improve the society? What kind of concept paper is it?

Research Concept Paper This is a summary written by students embarking on research to gather and present preliminary ideas: to review a field of study, state a research question, identify methods, and indicate the significance of a line of research, often including a budget and timeline. It tells the reader what the research is, why it is important and how it will be carried out. Source: https://stecshs.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/lesson-12-academic-english.pptx

Graphic Organizer is a visual display that demonstrates relationships between facts, concepts or ideas. guides the learner’s thinking as they fill in and build upon a visual map or diagram. informally used as a term to describe all visual learning strategies such as concept mapping, webbing, mind mapping, and more.
Concept Maps Concept maps graphically illustrate relationships between two or more concepts and are linked by words that describe their relationship.
Webs Brainstorming webs show how different categories of information relate to one another.
Mind Maps Mind Maps are visual representations of hierarchical information that include a central idea or image surrounded by connected branches of associated topics or ideas.

Let’s Solve It! Identify a problem related to the field of specialization you are handling in school. Make the teenagers in your community or course the subject of your concept paper. Think of a possible solution to address this problem. Write a brief report of your topic, the problem and your proposed solutions. Present your report with accompanying visuals/ graphic aids.
