CLASSIC THEORY OF HUMAN NEEDS, NON DIRECTIVE AND THERAPEUTIC LEARNING JOHN MARK FERNANDEZ

HUMANISTIC PSYCHOLOGY - Curriculum is concerned with the process not the products; personal needs not subject matter; psychological meaning and environmental situations .

HUMANISM - In this theory, curriculum is after the process, not the product; focuses on personal needs, not on the subject matter; and clarifying psychological meanings and environmental situations. In short, curriculum views founded on humanism posits that learners are human beings who are affected by their biology, culture, and environment. They are neither machines nor animals.
- A more advanced, more comprehensive curriculum that promotes human potential must be crafted along this line. Teachers don’t only educate the minds, but the hearts as well.

CARL ROGERS (born January 8, 1902, Oak Park, Illinois, U.S.—died February 4, 1987, La Jolla, California) was an American psychologist who originated the nondirective, or client- centred , approach to psychotherapy, emphasizing a person-to-person relationship between the therapist and the client (formerly known as the patient), who determines the course, speed, and duration of treatment.

NONDIRECTIVE AND THERAPEUTIC LEARNING He established counseling procedures and methods for facilitating learning Children perceptions, which are highly individualistic, influence their learning and behavior in class.

NONDIRECTIVE AND THERAPEUTIC LEARNING Nondirective learning: Learners are guided by their own interests and experiences. Therapeutic learning: Emphasizes counseling and personal support in the learning process.

KEY PRINCIPLES OF ROGERS LEARNING APPROACH Learning is highly individualistic. Children’s perceptions influence their learning and behavior. Focus on facilitating learning rather than directing it.

KEY LEARNING ACCORDING TO ROGERS Curriculum should focus on the process, not just the product. Prioritize personal needs over strict adherence to subject matter. Emphasize psychological meaning rather than cognitive scores

IMPLICATIONS FOR EDUCATION - Rogers’ ideas suggest that educators should create learning environments that are supportive and responsive to the individual needs of each student.
- Emphasis should be on personal development, fostering a sense of meaning and relevance in what students learn, rather than solely aiming for high grades or standardized test scores.

CONCLUSION Carl Rogers’ educational philosophy centers on the importance of understanding the learner as an individual and tailoring the educational experience to meet their personal needs and perceptions. This approach advocates for a more humanistic and personalized form of education.
