( Published :- 1794)

O my luve's like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June;
O my luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune.

●In the first stanza, the speaker Compare his beloved to a red rose, symbolising her beauty and
freshness.He also likenes her to a sweet melody, emphasizing the delightful and enchanting
nature of her presence in his life. This comparison of the beloved with precious and beautiful
things is a common poetic technique used to convey the depth of affection and admiration.
First Stanza :-

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.
Second Stanza :-
●The second stanza, the speaker continues to praise his beloved’s beauty and
affectionately calls her “ my bonny lass.” He pledges his love to her, proclaiming
that he will continue loving her until the seas run dry. This metaphorical promise
signifies the eternal nature of his love, as the seas going dry is an impossible
event.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun:
O I will love thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

●In the third stanza, the speaker reinforces his vow of eternal love, stating that he will
continue loving her until the rocks melt with the heat of the sun. This poetic hyperbole
further emphasize the everlasting nature of his affection. The speaker’s words are a
testament to the unwavering commitment and devotion he feels towards his beloved.
Third Stanza :-

●The poem concludes with a bittersweet farewell between the speaker and his beloved. Despite the
temporary separation, he expresses his care and concern for her well-being, wishing her a good life
and a bright future. His promise to return, even if the journey is long and time-consuming, reaffirms
his commitment and dedication to their relationship. The poem ends on a hopeful note, with the
speaker's promise serving as a beacon of hope for their future reunion.
And fare thee weel, my only luve,
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my luve,
Though it were ten thousand mile.
