AbO Blood Relationship

Karl Landsteiner Austrian Scientist at the University of Vienna Discovered the 4 different blood groups (1900) Awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine (1930)

Different Blood Groups These Blood groups are A, B, AB, and O.

Antigen Any substance that stimulates the body to exhibits an immune response. Located in the Plasma membrane of the RBCs. Located in the blood plasma. Blood proteins produced by the body to counteract a specific antigen like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and any foreign substance that accidentally mixes with the blood. Antibodies

Type O Blood Will not be rejected when given to people with blood types A, B, and AB. Type O people are referred to as the universal donor. Type O blood can only receive blood from another type O person.

Type Ab Blood Blood type AB people are referred to as the universal recipients . Their blood does not discriminate against any of the A, B, or O types. When blood given to people who are types O, A, or B, the blood of these people will clump or agglutinate.

Type A Blood This means that blood type A can only receive blood from type A or type O donors, and can only donate blood to type A or type AB recipients1. Blood type A can also have a positive or negative rhesus (Rh) factor, which is another protein in the red blood cells.

Type B Blood Type B blood individuals have the B antigen on their red blood cells (RBCs) surface and blood serum containing IgM antibodies against the A antigen. Therefore, a group B individual can receive blood only from individuals of groups B or O (with B being preferable), and can donate blood to individuals with type B or AB. The surface of the red blood cells contains B antigen, and the plasma has anti-A antibody
