Topic: Factors and Rules of Word Stress
What is stress? Stress means to emphasize given to certain syllable in a word. When a word has two or more syllables, one of them is pronounced with an additional force, and this is known as word stress. One word has only one stress. Example: Na ture, ta ble.
What is syllable? A syllable is a part of a word that contains a single vowel sound and it is pronounced as a unit. A syllable is a unit of unbroken sounds of a word. Example: Wa ter, of ten.
Types of stress: English has three levels/types of stress: primary, secondary, and unstressed/tertiary.
Rules of stress: Rule 1 – Nouns, adjectives and adverbs with two syllables : In most cases, the first syllable is stressed. For examples: Nouns: fa ther, mem ber, lan guage, na ture, cen tre, ta ble Adjectives: sim ple, lo cal, awk ward, lo wer, use ful, cle ver Adverbs: may be, of ten, kind ly, week ly, al ways .
Rule 2 – Verbs and prepositions with two syllables If the words belong to verbs and prepositions, in most cases, 2 nd syllable will be stressed. Examples: Be come , con tain , a mong , with out.
Rule 3 – Nouns ending with suffix: sion / tion , graphy , ce , cy, and ity If nouns belong to multiple syllables ending with these suffixes, we need to stress the syllable before the suffixation. Examples: Po si tion, cre a tion, com mi ssion, elec tri city.
Rule 4:Adjectives ending with affixes: ic,ical, tial , cial, tional If words belong to multi-syllable adjectives, we need to stress the syllable right before the affixes. Examples: gram ma tical, com mer cial, , in ten tional, op tional.
Rule 5 – Compound adjectives: For compound adjectives , the stress is always on the second part. For example: bad- tempered , old- fashioned, well - known , densely - populated
Rule 6 – Nouns and verbs with two syllables : In some cases, one single word can either be a noun or a verb, depending on stress. For example: ‘present ’. This is a two-syllable word. If we stress the first syllable, it will be a noun. I f we stress the second syllable, it becomes a verb.
