Grundfos FLOW THINKING
Accessories Used In Hydronic
System
And
Building Management System

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
Few points about piping…
•Condenser pipes are generally not insulated.
•Evaporator pipes are always insulated.
•Color of condenser pipes is generally green.
•Color of evaporator pipes is generally blue/black.

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
SUCTION DIFFUSER
•Diffuser–Provides and ensures uniform
flow pattern of pump inlet and thus protects
the pump impeller
•Orifice cylinder–Serves as pump
strainer and being oversize will assures
minimum strainer pressure drop
•Saves $$$–Diffuser and strainer all in
one piece. Faster to install and less pipe
joints
•Saves space–No more long pipe
entrance, conventional strainer, pipe saddle
and floor flange
•Field serviceable–All internal parts are
easily replaced including the full length
straightening vanes

Expansion Tanks

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
Types of Expansion Tanks
•Open Expansion tank…Location above the
highest point in the system
•Closed Expansion tank…Generally any where in
the system

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
Expansion Tanks
•These tanks are used to compensate for the pressure variation
due to the change in the water volume, which in turn changes
because of the temperature variation.
•Increase in the temperature of water in closed circuit results in
increase in pressure. This increase in pressure can damage the
pipe at the weakest point.
•These tanks are fitted with membrane, which expands or
contracts, according to the expansion of liquid, which takes
place in the lines.
•These tanks are made of Epoxy coated carbon steel.

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
Expansion Tanks
•Sizing of these tanks is very important because
wrong size can result in the damage of the tank.
Following formula can be used to find the capacity of
the tank:
V=(C X e)/(1-P
i/P
f)
•V –Size of Tank in Liters.
•C –Total water Quantity.
•P
f
-Maximum Working Pressure.
•P
i
-Minimum Working Pressure.
•e-Expansion coefficient based on the water temperature.

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
Expansion Tanks
•These tanks are available from 100 liters to 5000 liters capacity.
•At the time of supply, Nitrogen is filled up in the tanks.
•If nitrogen pressure drops, after some time, then compressed air
can be used, instead of Nitrogen.

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
What is BMS Communication...
•BMS –Building Management system.
•BAS –Building Automation System.

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
Purpose of BMS
•To control the equipment from a central place…
–By switching ON/OFF.
–By changing set points etc.
–By changing the present status of the equipment.
•To monitor the equipment from a central place…
–By getting and storing the actual values/status etc
•Or doing both…

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
Two type of Data…
•Read only data…
–E.g. pump status, speed, current, voltage etc..
•Write able data…
–E.g. change in set values or any other value in
PLC etc..

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
Digital –Analog Inputs/Outputs
•Analog type I/O –4-20 mA/0-10 V/0-20 mA
–Input E.g. signal from Pressure transmitter, DPT,
Temperature transmitter, flow meter etc.
–Output e.g. to VFD or to any display.
•Digital type I/O –
–Inputs e.g. High or Low, ON or OFF.
–Output e.g. Start/Stop command

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
Way of BMS communication
•Hard wired communication…
•Soft wired communication…

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
What data can we show…???
•Read Data
–VFD Speed.
–Current drawn by all the pumps.
–RPM.
–Power drawn.
•Write Data (Optional always)
–Set points.
•Other commands
–Potential free contact for start/stop of the system (thru PFU).
–Potential free contact for common alarm.
–Local/remote operation of PMU/PFU.

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
What data can we show…???
•Additional data from VFD(s) –Based on Type and make of VFD
–1 or 2 Analog output (configurable).
–DO for VFD status/fault etc.

Grundfos FLOW THINKING
What information should you collect while
taking order for VS Secondary system…
•Who is the BMS contractor?
•Who is the consultant?
•Any preferred protocol?
•Our standard is MODBUS. Is it acceptable to client?
What else to do?
Explain scope clearly to the contractor/end-client
