ACTIVITY – BASED LEARNING

What is activity method? Activity method is a technique adopted by a teacher to emphasize his or her method of teaching through activity in which the students participate rigorously and bring about efficient learning experiences. It is a child-centered approach. It is a method in which the child is actively involved in participating mentally and physically. Learning by doing is the main focus in this method.

According to the literature review, characteristics of activity based learning could be identified as follows ( Bonwel and Eison , 1991): Students are involved in learning activities more than listening, and less emphasis is placed on transmitting information and more on developing student’s skills.

Activity method It enhances creative aspect of experience. It gives reality for learning. Uses all available resources. Provides varied experiences to the students to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge, experience, skills and values. Builds the student’s self-confidence and develops understanding through work in his/her group. Gets experiences, develop interest, enriches vocabulary and provides stimulus for reading.

Steps required for Effective Organization of Activities. a. Planning. b. Involving children in the learning process. c. Each child is made an active learner. d. For each activity ensure you follow the principles of:- What? How? Work directions step by step, including: With whom? Where? How long? What after? e. Ensure you give clear instructions before each activity. It must focus on the above a, b, c, d.

Kinds of activities: The activities used in this strategy can be generalized under three main categories: Exploratory- gathering knowledge, concept and skill. Constructive- getting experience through creative works. Expressional – presentations.

SAMPLE ACTIVITIES: Elementary Level: Art-based activities Example: Paint using objects from nature : Have your students go outside and gather different objects to use in place of paintbrushes. The more often they do this, the more creative they will get with their choices as they learn how different objects create different effects.

Writing and theater activities These activities will thrill any learner who loves to entertain others and express herself through the arts. Example: Dress up and put on a short play Give your students a theme, such as a summertime picnic or a winter kingdom, and ask them to put together a short play to present to you later. It should have a beginning, a middle and an ending, but the rest is up to them. Encourage them to get into it by using whatever they can find to dress up as characters. Create your own movie: they can create a movie using pictures, their own footage or cartoons

Make a rainbow poem : This activity uses the colors of a rainbow to help teach your learner how to create a poem. Have your child choose the colors of his rainbow, and then come up with descriptions of each color. After all the descriptions are completed, he can line them up in a rainbow and will see that has created his own poem!

Cooking and food activities Create snack art : When it’s snack time, put out some ingredients that your child can use to make her own art creation . For them to familiarize with different kinds of vegetables. Science and STEM activities Try the cabbage color experiment : this activity is a fun way for kids to learn about how plants absorb water. All you will need is some cabbage leaves, water, food coloring and a few jars.

Create toothpick towers Create lemon volcanoes : This activity is full of frothy fun, and it smells good, too! Children will learn how the chemical reaction created by mixing citric acid and baking soda results in a bubbly volcano that they create on their own.

Physical games and activities Go on a scavenger hunt Create an obstacle course Have a dance party

High School Level 1. Think, pair and share Set a problem or a question around a certain topic, and pair up your students. Give each pair of students enough time so they can reach a proper conclusion, and permit them to share their conclusion in their personal voice. This way your students will be engaged, communicating, and remember more of the class than ever before.

2. Brainstorming Interactive brainstorming is mostly performed in group sessions. The process is useful for generating creative thoughts and ideas. Brainstorming helps students learn to work together, and above all, learn from each other.

Sample apps that can be used in brainstorming: Padlet Padlet can be used by students and by teachers. With padlet you can create an online board that you can share with every student or teacher you want. Just give them the link. Padlet allows you to insert ideas anonymously or with your name. It’s easy to use and very handy.

Popplet Popplet is perhaps the simplest tool to capture and organize ideas. With a few clicks on your screen you can make “ Popplets ” (little squares) and add text and images. It’s easy to connect the Popplets , rearrange them, change their colour and even adjust their shape.

Lucidchart is a web - based program which allows you to create plenty of different diagrams like flow charts, mind maps, wire frames and much more. Get started with a number of templates.

3. Exit slips These are best used at the end of the class session. You’ll ask the students to write for one minute on a specific question. It might be generalized to “what was the most important thing you learned today”. Then, you can decide if you are going to open up a conversation about it in your next class.   4. Concept Mapping – to activate and engage students during all stages of the learning process. 5. Use of graphic organizers – help students sequence information.

6. Experiment – Students are exposed to hands- on learning.

INTERACTIVE GAME ACTIVITIES Crossword puzzle The crossword game is perfect to use as repetition activity. The crossword game transforms these boring lessons into a fun experience. Scrabble Use the chapter (or course) title as the pool of letters from which to make words (e.g., mitochondrial DNA), and allow teams to brainstorm as many words relevant to the topic as possible. You can also actually play scrabble and ask students to form words from the newly learned vocabulary.

Bingo Bingo is a fun game that can be used for all sorts of exercises: language exercises, introductory games, math exercises, etc. Take a look at this blog post with all the different bingo possibilities here. You’ll be surprised about how many interactive lesson activities you can do with just one game. Puzzle - the game's goal is to fill the white squares with letters, forming words or phrases, by solving clues, which lead to the answers.

POWERPOINT GAME – BASED 1. She Loves Me, She Loves Me not! Choose a petal to remove from the flower. When the question appears, choose the correct answer. If you get it wrong and X will appear. If you would like a 50/50 ask for a hint. As soon as you get the correct answer a flower will fly in. Click on the flower to return to the original pluckable flower. The petal you chose should disappear. Now you can choose a new petal to pluck. When all petals have been removed, click I’m Finished for the final message.

2. Can you make it through the maze? Answer and question series with a thrill .

3. Deal or No Deal – for reviewing.

4. Jeopardy Students can choose a category and dollar amount. Click on that slide. They can give you an answer. Click on answer to display the correct answer. When you’ve given the appropriate points, click Back to the board to choose another question. The question you were just on should be gone now.

ELECTRONIC BASED ACTIVITY 1. Kahoot " Kahoots ", are multiple-choice quizzes that allow user generation and can be accessed via a web browser, phone, or the app itself. Can be used in all subject for unlocking vocabulary.

ROLE OF A TEACHER IN AN ACTIVITY BASED METHOD A planner, an organizer and evaluator. Facilitator. Decision maker. Knowledge imparter Disciplinarian

ADVANTAGES: • It is student based activity method • It makes the student independent and confident • It gives the real work experience to the students • Students involves whole-hearted in the learning process according to their needs, attitudes, interest and ability. • Completion of the output gives individuals an accomplishment

DISADVANTAGES: • It is a time consuming • There is a fear among teachers that drama use may cause sort of uncontrolled fun among learners. • It encourages incorrect forms of language as long as the teacher is not encouraged to correct mistakes immediately so as not to discourage students. • Difficulty enacting
