ADDING & SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS Using BUTTERFLY METHOD

THE BUTTERFLY METHOD 1 . Cross multiply numerator and denominator. 2 . Then, Add/Subtract the results from cross multiply and that will be your numerator. 3 . Next, multiply your two denominators and the answer is your new denominator. 4 .  Reduce the resulting fraction if necessary .

    + EXAMPLE no.1:

28 21 20 x 21 + 20 28         Cross multiply numerators & denominators. Add the two results. Multiply their denominators. The product will be your new denominator. Further, simplify the fraction. Reduce if needed.

    + EXAMPLE no. 2:

27 24 36 x 24 + 36 27     Cross multiply numerators & denominators. Add the two results. Multiply their denominators. The product will be your new denominator. Further, simplify the fraction. Reduce if needed.   ÷     =

    _ EXAMPLE no. 3:

40 35 16 x 35 - 16 40     Cross multiply numerators & denominators. SUBTRACT the two results. Multiply their denominators. The product will be your new denominator. Further, simplify the fraction. Reduce if needed.

    _ EXAMPLE no. 4:

48 36 20 x 36 - 20 48     Cross multiply numerators & denominators. SUBTRACT the two results. Multiply their denominators. The product will be your new denominator. Further, simplify the fraction. Reduce if needed.   ÷     =
