FUN WITH NUMBERS: BONDS TO 100 & MORE! Learn to Add & Subtract Easily
Learning Goals Learn bonds to 100 Add and subtract to the next or previous 100 Count up to find differences Practice and revise what we’ve learned
Bonds to 100 3 4 + 6 6 = 1 Number bonds to 100 are pairs of numbers that add together to make 100. They help us add and subtract quickly and improve mental math skills. Example: 8 3 + 1 7 = 1
Let’s solve! Add numbers to reach the nearest 100 or 1000 Subtract numbers to go back to the nearest 100 OR 1000 Add/Subtract to Next or Previous 100 or 1000 2 3 = 2 4 + 2 3 = 2 4 -
Answer: Add to the Next 100 2 2 3 4 3 +34 +66 Add to the Next 1000 6321 6300 6400 +21 +79
What It Means: Instead of subtracting directly, you start at the smaller number and count up to the bigger number. This is especially helpful when the numbers are close together or when crossing a hundred or thousand. Counting Up to Find the Difference
Example 1. Close numbers and crossing 100 Find the difference between 222 and 187 Add all the numbers in brackets “()” 187 → 190 (+3) → 200 (+10)→ 222 (+22) Total difference = 3+10+22=55 Tip: Add the jumps you made — that’s your difference!
Let’s practice addition and subtraction!
A pirate crew needed to sail 500 miles to reach a secret island marked on the map. After sailing 421 miles, how many miles do they still need to travel? Practice!
Let’s solve! They need to travel 79 more miles. Practice! 421→430(+9)→500(+70) Total difference in the bracket =9+70=79
A pirate had 334 gold coins. He bought a fancy pirate hat worth 275 gold coins. How much gold does he have left? Item 4
334 -275 Let’s solve! 9 12 5 2 The pirate had 59 gold coins left. Item 4 14
Let’s count up to find difference!
The treasure chest contains 343 gold coins. The captain gave a way 287 coins. How many did he have left? Item 5
Count up Let’s solve! There are 56 coins in total. 290 287 343 +3 +53
