OBJECTIVES Definition of terms. Discuss adolescent sexual reproductive health problems. Discuss adolescent sexuality and sexual behavior. Discuss ethical considerations related to adolescent and sexual health. Recognize cultural beliefs and practices that may impact adolescent sexual health behaviors.

INTRODUCTION For millions of young people around the world, the onset of adolescence brings not only changes to their bodies but also new vulnerabilities to human rights abuses, particularly in sexuality, marriage and childbearing arenas.

INTRODUCTION CONT… Millions of girls are coerced/unwanted into unwanted sex or marriage, putting them at risk of unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV and dangerous childbirth. Adolescent boys are at risk, as well. Young people-both boys and girls are disproportionately affected by HIV.

INTRODUCTION CONT… Too many young people face barriers to reproductive health information and care. According to 2009 population and housing census, adolescents and youth constitute about a third of Kenya's population. This large proportion of young people has major demographic, social and economic implications.

INTRODUCTION CONT… Particularly, adolescent fertility has remained high despite declines experienced among other age groups. The government of Kenya addresses adolescent sexual and reproductive health issues in health and development through activities initiated by the Division of Reproductive Health(DRH)

DEFINITION OF TERMS CONT.. Social definition: Adolescence is a stage in human development covering the onset of puberty until full social integration of the individual as an adult.

DEFINITION OF TERMS CONT.. Biological definition: This is a period in which an individual goes through physical changes and psychological changes accompanied by sexual maturation leading to procreating capacity.

INTRODUCTION TO SEXUALITY AND SEXUAL HEALTH. SEXUALITY. This is more than sexual feeling and sexual intercourse. Sexuality includes thinking of one self as a being, feeling attractive and behaving ,dressing or communicating in a sexy way. It includes feeling, thinking or behaving as a male or female. Being attractive, being in love and being in a relationship with sexual intimacy and sexual activities are all aspects of sexuality.

COMPONENTS OF SEXUALITY Biological aspect: This includes anatomical and physiological characteristics related to sex, sexual development and reproductive functions Psychological aspects: Sexuality involves emotional and cognitive aspects such as desire, attraction, intimacy, fantasies and sexual identity (e.g. sexual orientation and gender identity)

COMPONENTS OF SEXUALITY CONT.. Social aspect: sexuality is influenced by social norms, cultural beliefs, family values, peer influences, media and societal expectations regarding sexual behavior and relationships Cultural aspect: Cultural factors shape attitudes, beliefs, practices and taboos related to sexuality including perceptions of modesty, sexual expression and gender roles.

IMPORTANCE OF SEXUAL HEALTH Physical well-being: Sexual health includes the prevention and management of sexually transmitted infections, reproductive health care and contraceptive. Emotional well being: Positive sexual experiences, healthy relationships, effective communication and body confidence contribute to emotional well-being and self esteem.

IMPORTANCE OF SEXUAL HEALTH CONT.. Social well-being: Respectful and consensual sexual interactions, understanding sexual rights, addressing stigma and discrimination contribute to social well being.

INTEGRATION OF SEXUAL HEALTH INTO HOLISTIC CARE. DEFINITION OF HOLISTIC CARE It encompasses a comprehensive approach to health care that considers the physical, emotional, mental ,social and spiritual aspects of an individuals well-being. Integration of sexual health into healthcare involves incorporating comprehensive sexual health services and consideration into various aspects of patient care

INTEGRATION OF SEXUAL HEALTH INTO HOLISTIC CARE INCLUDES: Patient-centered approach Begin by establishing trust, respect and open communication with the patient to create a safe environment for the discussion Recognize the importance of addressing sexual health as an integral part of overall well-being and quality of life.

INTEGRATION OF SEXUAL HEALTH INTO HOLISTIC CARE INCLUDES: CONT… Comprehensive assessment Conduct a thorough assessment of the patients sexual health including physical, emotional, relational and cultural factors Document relevant medical history, sexual history, current concerns, sexual functions, contraceptive use and any past traumas.

INTEGRATION OF SEXUAL HEALTH INTO HOLISTIC CARE INCLUDES: CONT… Physical health considerations: Document any physical health issues or conditions that may impact sexual health such as chronic illnesses, medications surgeries or disabilities. Address concerns related to reproductive health, sexual function, pain during intercourse and contraception needs in the care notes.
