ZONES OF ADRENAL CORTEX
Their function and hormones
ZONES OF ADRENAL CORTEX
Zona glomerulosa (outer most)
Zona fasciculata (middle zone )
Zona reticularis (outermost)
ZONA GLOMERULOSA
•Constitutes 15% of adrenal cortex
•Secrete mineralocorticoids ( Aldosterone)
•Contain Aldosterone synthase
•Secretion of Aldosterone is controlled by extracellular concentration of
angiotensin II and potassium
(Mineralocorticoids are a class of steroid hormones that regulate salt and
water balances)
ZONA FASCICULATA
•Middle and widest zone
•Constitutes 75% of adrenal cortex
•Secrete glucocorticoids ,Cortisol and corticosterone
•Secretion of these hormones is controlled by hypothalamic pituitary axis via
adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)
(Glucocorticoids are steroid hormones that regulate multiple aspects of
glucose homeostasis. )
ZONA RETICULARIS
•Inner most zone of adrenal cortex
•Makes 10% of adrenal cortex
•Secretes adrenal androgens ,some amount of estrogen and some
glucocorticoids
•ACTH regulates their secretion along with cortical androgen stimulating
hormone
•Also secretes dehydroepiandrosterone and androstenedione
