1. Advantages of Direct Method (DM)
1. It makes the learning of English interesting and lively by establishing a direct bond
between a word and its meaning.
2. It is an action method facilitating alertness and participation of the pupils.
3. According to Macnee, “It is the quickest way of getting started”. In a few months over
500 of the commonest English words can be learnt and used in sentences. This serves as a
strong foundation of further learning.
4. Due to the application of the Direct Method, students are able to understand what they
learn, think about it and then express their own ideas in correct English about what they
have read and learnt.
5. Psychologically it is a sound method as it proceeds from the concrete to the abstract.
6. This method can be usefully employed from the lowest to the highest class.
7. Through this method, fluency of speech, good pronunciation and power of expression are
properly developed.
Disadvantages of Direct Method (DM)
1. There are many abstract words which cannot be interpreted directly in English and much
time and energy are wasted in making attempts for the purpose.
2. This method is based on the principles that auditory appeal is stronger than visual. But
there are children who learn more with visual than with their oral-aural sense like ears
and tongue.
3. The method ignores systematic written work and reading activities and sufficient
attention is not paid to reading and writing.
4. Since this method, grammar is closely bound up with the reader, the difficulty is
experienced in providing readers of such kind.
5. There is the dearth of teachers trained and interested in teaching English in this method.
6. This method may not hold well in higher classes where the Translation Method is found
suitable.
7. In larger classes, this method is not properly applied and teaching in this method does not
suit or satisfy the needs of individual students in large classes.
2. Audiolingualism
- The father by Prof. Nelson Brooks (1964)
- Advantages or strength: advantages or strengths are the context of ALM.
1. Development of listening and speaking power.
2. Correct pronunciation.
3. Large class size could be maintained.
4. Limited useful vocabulary.
5. Lucrative for average students.
6. Participation of the learners.
- Disadvantages or limitations:
1. Equal importance is not given to all four skills at the time.
2. Meaning is neglected.
3. Teacher dominated method.
4. A mechanical method because of only pattern practice and memorization.
5. Profitable for the hard-working learners.
3. PPP
Advantages of Presentation Practice Production (PPP)
1. Easy to prepare
2. Follows a three-step routine
3. Easy for learners to follow this type of lesson
4. Easy for learners to remain focused
5. Contributes to internalising structures in long-term memory
6. It scaffolds the learning process into smaller chunks – (expose learners to the target
structure, gives them controlled practice and then free practice)
7. God for analytical learners (rules explained)
8. Provides example as the context is beneficial
9. It provides a clear and simple structure of the lesson
10. The material is ordered from the simplest to the most difficult
11. The teacher and the learners can easily see the progress
Disadvantage of Presentation Practice Production (PPP)
1. It is a teacher-centred method and teacher talking time might be too long
2. It is more focused on accuracy than on fluency except in the very last stage
3. Students may get bored and unwilling to participate
4. Since everything is scaffolded learners may not remember things
5. Not suitable for all types of learning styles; the learner has little control over their
learning.
4. Communicative language leaner
Father By : Charles A. Curran
Advantages of CLL: Works well with lower level students who are struggling in spoken English,
lower students anxiety and overcome threatening affective filter, it create a warm sympathetic and
trusting relationship between teacher and learners, train students become independent, counselor
allow to learners to determine types of conversation.
Disadvantages of CLL: Some learners find it difficult to speak on tape, in order to student become
independent, teacher might neglect the need for guidance, teacher has t be highly proficient in
target language and in the language of students, it is time consuming to carry out, translation is an
intricate and difficult task.
5. Communicative language teaching
Father By Noam Chomsky
Advantages
Learner-Oriented
This approach is learner-oriented as it takes the interests and needs of the learners into account.
Personalized Language
This approach aims to personalize the language so that learners can adapt to its use more
effectively.
Localized Language
This approach also aims to localize language learning so that learners can learn to use it naturally.
It emphasizes meaningful language learning.
Uses Authentic Resources
This approach also makes use of authentic teaching resources that motivate and encourage the
learners.
Efficient
It is an efficient and proficient approach that encourages children to learn grammar to speak well.
Disadvantages
Lack Of Context
The context of the learning and teaching atmosphere is not taken into account.
False Interpretation
The approach is often interpreted as “if the teacher understands the student we have good
communication” but native speakers may not understand them.
Lack of Accuracy
The main focus of the approach is on fluency rather than language accuracy.
Lack of Errors Reduction
The approach does not focus much on removing the errors of the learners.
6. Task Based Learning
advantages of TBL
Motivation
Learners are highly motivated to participate in tasks and activities included in this approach.
Cooperation
Learners have to work together in groups which encourages them to cooperate.
Meaningful Interaction
They will also grow accustomed to producing meaningful interaction when working in groups.
Experience
The approach also focuses on the previous knowledge and experience of learners.
Exploration
With this approach, learners can explore the new features of the language they are learning.
Some disadvantages of TBL
Seedhouse (1999) implies that it could be argued that TBL emphasises too much on tasks and
communicating meaning and this could have an impact on how to use the language with the
correct form. In addition to this it is important to realise that there is a lot more to communication
than performing tasks.
Skehan (1996) expressed that TBL could have some dangers if it is not executed correctly and
could result in affecting the growth and change of the language learners’ interlanguage. So from
this view we can see that some sort of fossilization may occur within the students and cause
barriers for the learners to progress. TBL is still not convincing, that it is a superior teaching
method; it remains an opinion rather than reality and certainty Richards and Rodgers (2001).
