Advantages and Disadvantages of CMS from an SEO Perspective ChrisDry.com Krisztián Száraz ’ChrisDry’
Statistics and Usage There are approximately 109+ billion websites on the internet (source: gemini.google.com, 2024.05.13). The number of active websites is much lower, around 192+ million. Currently, more than 77+ million websites use a content management system (CMS). This estimate is based on BuiltWith's 2023 data. There are over 1,200 different CMS systems managing at least 80 websites each (in total, there are 10,000+ CMS systems managing more than 10 websites each). The proportion of websites using a CMS is about 30-40%. Therefore, ~60-70% of websites are built with custom code or use static HTML. Statistics and Usage 2
They enable users to freely access and modify the source codes (Open Source i.e. OS). These CMSs are free to download and use, and often have large communities providing support and plugins. Some examples of popular O pen S ource CMS are: WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal. They require significant upfront investment and technical support. Ensuring regular software updates. In addition to the standard CMS, they also offer extensive customization options. CMS types: Open S ource CMSs 3
These CMSs are paid (license or rental) and usually offer more professional features and support than O pen S ource CMSs. Some popular commercial CMS are Shopify, Wix , and Squarespace. License cost. Regular monthly/yearly updates. Extra upgrades and personalized costs. CMS types: Commercial CMSs 4
You can connect your headless CMS to websites, mobile apps and smart devices. Separation of backend and frontend. Improved developer customization and integration. Better performance and loading speed. Best headless systems - in my opinion: Contentful > Sanity > Strapi > Agility > Kontent > Directus > Dato > Prepr > Hygraph > Prismic > Uniform > Storyblok > ButterCMS ( but, we did not analyze these )… CMS types: Headless CMSs 5
A Custom CMS is a customized CMS created specifically for the unique needs of businesses. They can be deprogrammed or reworked based on existing CMS frameworks. It's like having a CMS designed exclusively for your business. The features of the custom CMS are as follows: Tailored to individual business needs . Full control over functionality and design (commitment to the development company, unique code, no one takes over) . CMS types: Custom CMSs (i.e. custom developments) 6

The fastest? Squarespace, GravCMS, Drupal, HubSpot CMS… Best (security) protection? Liferay, Drupal, Adobe Commerce (Magento), Shopify, Typo3… Best for blogging (news): WordPress, Ghost, Hubspot CMS, Drupal, Zyro, Squarespace... Most products? Shopify+, Magento2, Typo3, Shopware… Emerging CMS (present/future): Contentful (headless), Sanity (headless), Craft Are there better CMSs out there? 23
There is no perfect CMS. What is the goal? Development goal: What type of website do we want to create? A blog, a webshop or a site for another purpose? To which country(s)? If it's a webshop : how many products, how much load can be expected? Protection, security? Speed? Plugins, connections, APIs, CRM? Payment and delivery connections? Number of international development team, support? Number of domestic developers, speed of transferability? Do you need a strong storage space, and if so, how much resources do you need? Are AI modules available, how effective is the Blog? 26
On what basis should you choose? Design expectations: How high-quality (UX) (template/theme) is in the given CMS. Support: Frequent updates and many extensions indicate the viability of the system - to Google guidelines + development staff. Price: The more popular CMS systems (e.g. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal) are free, but the price of add-ons and templates and extensions, as well as license fees, must also be taken into account. User interface: Ease of use is very important so that we can use the system efficiently and simply. SEO: It is also worth paying attention to the chosen CMS from the point of view of search engine optimization. Extensions and accessories: The more pre-made of these, the faster the integration or exchangeability . 27
Conclusion: it is still not easy to choose a good CMS “It was suggested. Cheap." - If a client doesn't know and asks an acquaintance what worked for him: it is not at all certain that it will be good for him. My own experience: approx. In 80% of 40+ companies, the above method did not work = you could start the development again. There were times when the competition directly proposed an inefficient CMS - e.g. in a Fb group. New CMS = new SEO result. Redirect is important, but it is not enough today. Recommendation: A CMS expert should be consulted, and then a development team should be tendered, but only if we already know the most ideal CMS. If the developers are not told the basic SEO rules, there will still be a lot of repair and development costs: the SEO colleagues must be involved as early as the framework plans. 28
“ In most cases, a customer has even "tried" 2-3 CMSs: Surcharge: HUF 2-4 million minimum. Loss of time: 1-2 years minimum. Brand decline: unobtainable and unaffordable for many . ” 29
