Defination ... The path taken by the drug to get into the body is known as the route of drug administration. A drug may be in ionized or unionized form.

Parenteral route of drug administration refers to drugs given by routes other than the digestive tract. The term parenteral is usually used for drugs given by injection or infusion .

Advantages 1. An immediate physiological response can be achieved 2. Suitable for uncooperative nauseous or unconscious patients must he administered by injection 3. Provides correcting serious disturbance of fluid and electronic balances 4. No risk of degradation of the drug by digestive juices 5.Low concentration of drug required

Disadvantages 1.Required trained personal and require more time than those administered by other routes 2. It is difficult to reverse its physiological effect 3. It is more expensive than preparation of given by other routes 4. Requires strict adherence to aseptic procedures and some pain on injection is inevitable.
