What are affixes? A letter or group of letters added either to the beginning or end of a word It forms a different word with a different meaning Two types : prefixes and suffixes Examples : -un, -or, -y.

Prefixes They are added at the beginning of each word They form a new noun Examples : un -, multi -, co-.

Suffixes They are added at the end of a word They form a new verb Examples : -s, -en, -ing.

Spelling rules Prefixes : Keep the root Doubling of letters - un + employed = unemployed Double letters - un + natural = unnatural Hyphenation - ‘self-, self-esteem’ Prefix assimilation - ‘in = im’ Exceptions Suffixes Double the consonant - ‘fatter (short vowel one consonant)’, ‘cancelled ( syllables and L at the end) Drop the silent E - ‘driving (silent E a vowel suffix)’ ‘likeable (exceptions) Keep the final E - ‘advantageous (ending in CE or Ge)’ ‘agreeing (ending in EE or YE)’ ‘lately (adding -ly)’ ‘careful (adding -ful)’ Keep the Y - ‘enjoyed (ending in a vowel)’ ‘worrying (suffix that starts with I)’ Change the Y to an I - ‘beautiful (ending with a consonant)’ ‘dryer (exceptions)’ Change IE to Y - ‘dying’ ‘lying’
