GEOGRAPHY
ThecityissituatedonthewesternsideofIndia.
Thecityislocatedinasandyanddryarea.Exceptforthesmallhillsof
ThaltejJodhpurTekra,theentirecityisalmostflat.
Since,Ahmedabad liesonthewesternsideinthestateofGujarat,whichis
basicallyadesertarea;itexperiencesextremetypeofclimate.
Thereare2mainlakeslocatedinthecitylimits–theKankarialake,andthe
Vastapurlake.
Kankarialake,locatedinManinagar,isanartificiallakedevelopedby
Qutb-ud-dinAybakin1451.
TheSabarmatibifurcatesthecityintoeasternandwesternparts,
connectedbyninebridges,twoofwhichwereconstructedafter
independence.
Thoughtheriverisperennial,itgetsdriedupinthesummer,leavingonlya
smallstreamofwaterflowing.

HISTORY
ThehistoryofAhmedabad stretchesasfarbackasinthe11th
centuryandlinkingitselfwitholdtownsofAshavalandKarnavati
about1000yearsago.
Intheyear1411AD,SultanAhmedShahbuiltcitadeland
encourageddevelopmentoftradeandcommerce.
In1456AD,anenclosingwallwasconstructeddefiningaperiphery
tothecity-limits.
Thecitywithinthiswallgotstructuredintowards,organizedby12
mainroadseachterminatingatagateinthewall.
In1487,MahmudBegada,thegrandsonofAhmedShah,fortified
thecitywithanouterwall10km(6.2mi)incircumferenceand
consistingoftwelvegates,189bastionsandover6,000battlements.

Evolutionofthecity
Withthecomingoftherailwayaround1860,developmentbegan
tospillover(beyondthecity-limits)towardsthenortheastand
southeastofthewalledcity.
Thefirsttextilemillwasstartedin1861herebyRanchhodlal
Chhotalal.
Thisalsoresultedintheindustrialandresidentialdevelopment
acrossthewesternsideofSabarmatiRiver.
Constructionof5bridges–EllisBridge,GandhiBridge,SardarPatel
Bridge,theNehruBridgeandtheSubhashBridgeacceleratedthis
development.
Butbyandlargetheindustrialdevelopment hasremained
concentratedontheeasternsideandthewalledcityhas
continuedtogrowindensityduetoincorporationoffringeareas
intothecitylimits.

ThecitymunicipalitywasgiventhestatusofMunicipalCorporationin1950
whenthecitystartedgrowingrapidlyeastwardsandsouthwards.
Inthelaterpartofthecentury,thewesternparthasdevelopedrapidly.
ThecityisgovernedbyAhmedabad MunicipalCorporation(AMC),
establishedinJuly1950.
Realizingtheacuteneedforaholisticapproachtotheconservationand
preservationofthisvaluableheritageresource,Ahmedabad Municipal
Corporation(AMC)withassistancefromCRUTAFoundationsetupa
heritagecellin1996.
Itsmainobjectivesaretocreatebasicawarenessamongstthecitizens,
promotetraditionalbuiltforms,supportparticipatoryactionprogrammes
andtoco-ordinateeffortsofdifferentdisciplines,stakeholdersand
authorities.

distinctlevels:
Theentiretyofthewalledcity:ASIhasatotalof52Indo-Islamicmonuments
underprotection.Inaddition,therearemanyHinduandJaintemples,the
Gaekwad’s HavelienclaveofMarathaperiodandseveralother
institutionalbuildingsandbungalowsoftheColonialperiod.Atthe
moment,thesestructuresareinastateofdisrepairexceptforthefewJain
templestakencareofbytheJaincommunity.TheCityWallanditsGates
areequallyindilapidatedcondition.

Ahmedabad municipal Corporation (AMC) was established in year 1950
The 190.84 sqkm area within the AMClimits consists of :

A well planned western sector with wide roads accommodating major
