History of Sikkim Sikkim, the name of the state originated from the words su him – which means new house. When India got independence in the year 1947, many political parties were formed in Sikkim. Sikkim became the official state of India in the year 1975 Sikkim is a state in northeastern India. It borders Tibet in the north and northeast, Bhutan in the east, Nepal in the west, and West Bengal in the south. It was ruled by Buddhist priest-kings known as the Chogyal. It became a princely state of India in 1890.
The official languages of the state are English, Nepali, Sikkimese, and Lepcha.
