THE PROBLEM IN CYBERSECURITY AND SAFE THREATS Presented by: Angel Jane Eusebio

Existing problems in cybersecurity and safety threats include sophisticated malware, such as ransomware; social engineering techniques like phishing; attacks on cloud infrastructure and Internet of Things (IoT) devices; supply chain attacks that compromise software integrity; the emergence of AI-driven attacks; increased risks from remote work; and the ongoing challenge of securing sensitive data from internal and external threats, leading to breaches and financial losses.

The Unisys Security Index report from 10 September 2019 reveals that Filipino consumers have the highest level of concern about security issues among 13 countries surveyed. The survey, which polled 1,079 adults in the Philippines, shows that data security is the top concern, with 90% worried about unauthorized access to personal information , 87% about internet hacking or viruses , and 84% about bankcard fraud . The Philippines is also unique in that concerns about natural disasters like floods or typhoons rank in the top three, with 89% of Filipinos worried about this issue. The study highlights that 36% of Filipinos experienced a data breach in the last year, with common attacks including email hacking , social engineering scams , and hacked social media profiles . In response, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is rolling out initiatives to protect citizens, including a cybersecurity management system and educational programs for the youth.

The Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries to cyberattacks due to its rapid digital adoption. According to Kroll , a financial and risk advisory firm, the country faces significant cybersecurity threats, with malware, ransomware, spyware, phishing, and password attacks being the top causes of incidents. These cyberattacks often lead to data loss, business interruptions, and intellectual property theft. Financial institutions , healthcare , and government agencies are primary targets, with recent breaches exposing sensitive personal information, such as in the 2016 COMELEC hack . Cyberattacks have also impacted banking, insurance, and remittance sectors, resulting in identity theft and fraud. As digital services expand, protecting data and systems is crucial to prevent further harm. The need for stronger cybersecurity measures is essential as digital interconnectedness grows.

Cybersecurity is no longer just a technical challenge but a critical issue that affects every individual, organization, and nation. As digital systems continue to evolve and integrate into our daily lives, the risks associated with cyber threats grow exponentially. Without robust security measures, the consequences of data breaches, financial fraud, and privacy violations will continue to undermine trust and hinder progress. It is imperative that we prioritize cybersecurity as a foundational element of our digital future to protect not only sensitive information but also the integrity of our institutions and society as a whole.

The main problem highlighted is the high vulnerability of the Philippines to cyberattacks due to rapid digital adoption and weak cybersecurity infrastructure. The articles point out that malware, ransomware, spyware, phishing, and password attacks are the most common threats. These threats have led to serious consequences like identity theft, data breaches, and business disruptions, especially in financial, healthcare, and government sectors. Public concern is also high, with many Filipinos fearing data theft, internet hacking, and fraud.
