All Summer In A Day Summary
In "All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury and "Examination Day" by Henry Slesar, many similarities and differences emerge throughout the stories.
"Examination Day" is about a 12–year–old boy who has to take a test by the government only a few weeks after his birthday. The boy's name is
Dickie and he passes the test by the government, and as a result they exterminate him. This portrays the dim mood of Bradbury's story. In "All Summer
in a Day" a character living on Venus, named Margot, is different than the people around her. She is different because she remembers the sun, unlike the
other characters living on Venus. Furthermore, there are similarities between the settings, the the, and the way the authors express their writing in "All
Summer in a Day" and "Examination Day".
Although both "All Summer in a Day" and "Examination Day" have similar moods and settings, their themes are different. The theme of
"Examination Day" is that if you try to make a utopia, you may need to make unjust rules in order to make things right. This appears when the
government is talking to Dickie's parents, "...whether you wish his body interred by the government, or would you prefer a burial place" (3). This
quote exemplifies how the government had to terminate Dickie because he is too intelligent. In addition, this illustrates how the government doesn't
want anybody to be smart enough to question the government and as a consequence, they kill him. On the other hand, in "All Summer in a Day" the
theme is to not be jealous of others and treat others the way you want to be treated. This theme is relevant when the other kids lock Margot out and
are mean to her just because she is different and because she remembers the sun: "They surged about her, caught her up and bore her, protesting, and
then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door"(3). Ray Bradbury exhibits how the other
kids on Venus are extremely violent with Margot and lock her up in a closet. In addition, this conveys how they seize her because they are jealous and
are not treating Margot how they would want to be treated. Ultimately, the theme of both "Examination Day" and "All Summer in a Day" are different,
