ALPHA & OMEGA Fattyacid Oxidation

Slide Content

ALPHA &
OMEGA
F
attyacid Oxidation

Other Oxidations
α oxidation of branch chain fatty acid
ω oxidation of fatty acid

ω oxidation of fatty acid
Omega (last) carbon with respect to carboxyl group
is oxidised to corresponding alcohol.
It occurs in Endoplasmic reticulum of liver & kidney
and finally carboxylic acid is generated which will
enter Mitochondria for Beta oxidation.
ω- hydroxy fattyacid requires cytP
450
, Oxygen,
NADPH and Mixed function oxidases.
Other Enzymes needed are alcohol dehydrogenase
and aldehyde dehydrogenase

ω oxidation of fatty acid
Dicarboxylic acid
Fatty acid
Oxidized on both ends by Beta oxidation
Short chain
Dicarboxylic acid
Enters Krebs cycle

ω oxidation of fatty acid
It oxidises terminal ω- carbon and leads to synthesis
of dicarboxylic acid using cytP
450 (uses NADPH) and
can form ester linkage to CoA and then it is subjected
to β oxidation
This is a slow process than Beta oxidation.
ω oxidation is involved in metabolism of drug
molecules, which contain alkyl chain. They get
converted to Dicarboxylic acid and becomes polar, so
their excretion is facilitated.
Mainly fatty acids having carbons between 10- 12
may go for ω oxidation .
