INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The ROLE OF MATERIALS ( Cunningsworth , 1995) A resource for presentation materials A source of activities for learner practice and communicative interaction A reference source for learners on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and so on A source of stimulation and ideas for classroom activities A syllabus A support for less experienced teachers
The functions of materials (Dudley-Evans & St. John, 1998) As a source of language As a learning support For motivation and stimulation For reference
Types of Instructional Materials Printed Materials Advantages Available to learner in absence of teacher Widely acceptable, familiar Readily available, relatively cheap Convenient form Learner controls rate of reading Content easily altered to target specific audiences
Printed Materials… Disadvantages: Most abstract form of reality Immediate feedback limited Proper reading level essential for full usefulness Less useful with low literate learners or visually or cognitively impaired learners Inappropriate for illiterate learners
Kinds of Instructional Materials I. Printed Materials a. Textbooks b. Supplemental materials 1. Workbooks 2. Duplicated Outlines 3. Teacher-prepared study guides 4. Reference Books 5. Pamphlets 6. Magazine Articles 7. Newspapers
Kinds of Instructional Materials… II. Audio Aids 1. Radio 2. Phonograph 3. Tape Recorders
What materials are used in the ALS? The ALS utilizes learning modules. Each module is complete in itself. It contains the description of the module, objectives, learning activities, and pre and post tests. Modules for the basic and lower elementary level learners come with a Facilitator’s Guide. Meanwhile, modules for advanced elementary and secondary levels were designed for self-learning.
What materials are used in the ALS? In the conduct of ALS sessions, use of supplementary learning materials is being encouraged particularly those that are developed by the Facilitator to suit the local need and context and are locally available.
What materials are used in the ALS? In partnership with various organizations, both local and international, the DepEd-BALS was able to adapt and/or produce print and non-print learning materials to supplement the existing modules in the conduct of ALS learning sessions.
What materials are used in the ALS? Supplementary materials are important in the conduct of ALS learning sessions. Additional materials make learning sessions more effective by reinforcing newly acquired literacy skills. They also serve as springboards to a new lesson, thus, making learning more fun and interesting. Use of multi-media also gives both Facilitators and learners chance to access new information and technology and activates multi-sensory learning.
Strategies in dealing with ALS learners

HOW CAN YOU HELP THEM? Know them. Build supportive environment that respond to their immediate needs. Implement flexible scheduling. Use effective, accessible, and age-appropriate materials. Provide intensive literacy instruction using flexible strategies Teach them learning strategies that they can use in the near future. Using the dictionary Using a calculator Locating a place in a map Google search using mobile internet 7. Use community resources to support the learners.
When teaching adults, remember that they don't have to come to your classes. They will attend if they find the classes fun and interesting and they feel they are learning something. TIPS in teaching als learners
1. Encourage the members of your class to interact.
2. Always have a refreshment break.
3. Make the classes fun
4. If at all possible, talk to your students personally before the first class.
5. Be relaxed and friendly and relaxed, allow them time and space to settle, and allow them to talk about their previous experiences there.
6. Make time in each class to talk to every student.
7. Remember that there are students who might learn more slowly.
9. Don't be afraid to ask your students how they feel the course is going.
REFLECTION TIME! How can you tailor your teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of your students effectively, ensuring both engagement and understanding?
A L S is not about teaching a curriculum… it is about teaching them by HEART … When you do this… At the end, you will say… Thank You Lord for being a teacher.
