INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION What is Alternative E nergy? Alternative Energy is defined as energy that is not derived from natural gas, coal, and other fossil fuels and so emits little to no greenhouse emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2). This indicates that alternative energy does not contribute to the greenhouse effect, which causes climate change . What is Energy? The expression “ energy ” is often used without a great deal of thought and is applied in various different contexts. In its simplest terms, Energy is the ability to do work, the ability to make things happen. But in reality, it does much more. Energy is one of our most valuable resources and has always existed in one form or another.

SOLAR POWER
SOLAR POWER Solar power is energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy. Solar energy is the cleanest and most abundant renewable energy source. As the sun burns brightly in the solar system 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, solar energy in the form of “Solar Power” is classed as a renewable energy resource, and for all practical purposes, we can consider Solar Power as power from the sun. The amount of radiant energy that is available for use in a solar power system is only a very small amount of the total solar radiation received by the earth above its atmosphere. This is mainly because the clouds, the atmosphere itself and the ground conditions which can either absorb or reflect most of this solar energy back into the sky and space.

WIND ENERGY
WIND ENERGY Wind power or wind energy describes the process by which the wind is used to generate mechanical power or electricity. Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power. Wind turbines work on a simple principle: instead of using electricity to make wind—like a fan—wind turbines use wind to make electricity. Wind turns the propeller-like blades of a turbine around a rotor, which spins a generator, which creates electricity.
Types of Wind Turbines HORIZONTAL-AXIS TURBINES Horizontal-axis wind turbines are what many people picture when thinking of wind turbines. Most commonly, they have three blades and operate "upwind," with the turbine pivoting at the top of the tower so the blades face into the wind. VERTICAL-AXIS TURBINES Vertical-axis wind turbines come in several varieties, including the eggbeater-style Darrieus model, named after its French inventor. These turbines are omnidirectional, meaning they don’t need to be adjusted to point into the wind to operate.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY Geothermal Energy is an alternative natural energy resource based on underground hot water sources as it draws its heat from the Earth’s core. The heat from the core is extremely hot and powerful enough to melt rock into a hot liquid within the Earth called magma, and it is this liquid magma which we now call lava once at the surface we see flowing out of the tops of volcanos. Geothermal is very well suited for home heating and cooling by installing either geothermal heat pumps or a geothermal heat exchanger for direct use. Since this energy resource is constantly being re-supplied by the sun and the surrounding Earth, “Geothermal Energy” is a renewable energy resource.

HYDRO ENERGY
HYDRO ENERGY WHAT IS HYDROPOWER? Hydropower, or hydroelectric power, is one of the oldest and largest sources of renewable energy, which uses the natural flow of moving water to generate electricity. There are three types of hydropower facilities: impoundment, diversion, and pumped storage.
HYDRO ENERGY Disadvantages Hydropower plants can be impacted by drought. When water is not available, the hydropower plants can't produce electricity. Damage to Wildlife habitats. Limited plant locations Advantages Hydropower provides benefits beyond electricity generation by providing flood control, irrigation support, and clean drinking water. Hydropower provides low-cost electricity and durability over time compared to other sources of energy.

WAVE ENERGY Wave power converts the periodic up-and-down movement of the oceans waves into electricity by placing equipment on the surface of the oceans that captures the energy produced by the wave movement and converts this mechanical energy into electrical power. Wave energy is actually a concentrated form of solar power generated by the action of the wind blowing across the oceans surface. As the suns rays strike the Earth’s atmosphere, they warm it up. Differences in the temperature of the air masses around the globe causes the air to move from the hotter regions to the cooler regions, resulting in winds.

WAVE ENERGY What are the uses of wave energy? Wave energy is used for several purposes: Electricity generation - one of the most common uses of wave energy is to generate electricity. Desalination - wave energy can be used to power desalination systems, which can provide clean drinking water in coastal communities. Pumping and irrigation - wave energy can be used to pump water for irrigation and other agricultural purposes, particularly in coastal areas. Industrial sector- Wave energy can be used to power industrial processes, such as the extraction of minerals from seawater. Transport - Wave energy can be used to power ships and boats, reducing the need for fossil fuels and reducing emissions in the maritime sector.

TIDAL ENERGY
TIDAL ENERGY Tidal Energy or Tidal Power as it is also known, is another form of hydro power that exploits the vast energy source of the oceans tides to generate electricity. Tidal Energy is a “sustainable energy source”, as the Earth uses the gravitational forces of both the moon and the sun everyday to move vast quantities of water around the oceans and seas producing tides. Tidal energy, just like hydro energy transforms water in motion into a clean energy. The motion of the tidal water, driven by the pull of gravity, contains large amounts of kinetic energy in the form of strong tidal currents called tidal streams.
TIDAL ENERGY How does tidal energy work? In simple terms, a tidal energy works via a turbine works like a wind turbine, with blades rotating 12-to-18 times a minute depending on tide strength. The turbine is connected to a gearbox that turns a generator, creating electricity. There are currently three different ways to get tidal energy: tidal streams, barrages, and tidal lagoons.
TIDAL ENERGY Advantages Tidal energy is an inexhaustible source of energy since water is available in most parts of the earth in large water bodies that can be utilized. Disadvantages Tidal power can damage marine life, as tidal turbines with their rotating blades may lead to deaths of living creatures in a sea. Noise from the rotation of the turbines may also impact fish habitations in tidal power locations. Tidal energy can also impact the quality of water and sediment processes.
BIOMASS ENERGY
BIOMASS ENERGY Biomass energy is a term used for any kind of non-fossil fuel that is classified as being organic, biological or made of plant matter, and which can be converted into a usable energy source. Biomass is considered to be a vital resource on the earth to the point of being called a “ Biorenewable Resource”. Biomass takes on many forms, but a good example of “biomass energy” is the open burning of dead wood, sticks or straw on a campfire for heating and cooking. However, this type of biomass incineration is not very efficient as most of the heat energy it produces goes up with the smoke.

Switching to renewable energy sources to produce electricity will help the planet by slowing and reversing climate change. Save lives : Making the switch to just hydropower, wind energy, and solar energy can potentially save up to 7 million lives each year by reducing air pollutants. Reduce severe weather : By slowing the effects of climate change and eventually reversing them, we can expect to see a reduction in extreme weather like droughts, floods, and storms caused by global warming. Minimize fuel dependency : We can diversify our energy supply by implementing the widespread use of large-scale renewable energy technologies and minimizing our imported fuel dependency.
