ME 3052 MACHINE DESIGN AND PROJECT AN AUTOMATED DEVICE TO PRODUCE WICKS FOR OIL LAMPS OUT OF FABRIC STRIPS

USER NEEDS Need a machine for the process of twisted wicks That machine should be able to perform all the operations (cutting, packing etc.) That machine should be able to automate Any size of cotton cloth can be fed Wick should be properly twisted Can be easily maintained Group 28 2

ENGINEERS PERSPECTIVE Should be able to operate by a single person Cotton fabric strip of 1 inch width should be able to fed in Minimum length of input strip is 2 feet Length of a twisted wick is 3 inch A packet of wicks contain 12 wicks Average production of 500 wicks per hour Can be operated with 5 A/230 V supply Machine should capable of running more than 3 hours continuously Group 28 3

Group 28 4

METHOD OF TWISTING THE FABRIC STRIP Sub Problem Solution Number of strips per twist One strip Method of twisting the strips Rotating the strips Method of folding two strips Hook Method of grabbing the initial strip Grabbing jaws Method of removing Slot with vacuum Method of feeding Continuous feeding Group 28 5

SUGGESTED DESIGN FOR TWISTING Group 28 6

Hook Rollers Grabber Stationary Unit Sliding Unit Group 28 7

METHOD OF CUTTING THE STRIP Sub Problem Solution Measuring the require d length Intermittent motion mechanism Method of cutting the strip Moving shear blades Method of grabbing the fabric Grabbing jaws Group 28 8

Group 28 9

METHOD OF PACKING Sub Problem Solution Method of counting wicks Intermittent motion mechanisms Method of inserting wicks Insert as a bundle Type of polythene used Polythene tube Method of opening By suction cups Method of sealing the packet Heat seal Method of cutting the packet Shear blades Group 28 10

SUGGESTED DESIGN FOR PACKING Group 28 11
