INTRODUCTION Sports in India date back as far as 8000 years. Records suggest the birth of sports in India came during the Indus Valley Civilisation , 3300-1300 BCE.
Chess or ‘ Chaturanga ’ The creation of chess came during the Gupta Dynasty (280 Ad – 550 AD). Chaturanga was split into four elements , each representing one division of the military. It also became a popular mental game, which made its way to Persia. The Persian empire went onto adapt this into a game with pawns, rooks, bishops, knights, queen and a king .
CHESS- ASHTAPADA
Wrestling or ‘ Pehlwani ’ Pehlwani is a form of wrestling originating in India, during the Mughal Empire (1500-1800 AD). Referring also as Malla-yuddha Athletes training for Malla-yuddha were living in dorms, practising vegetarianism and coaching other students. Main focus points of the sport taught grappling, biting, choking and pressure point striking.
Kabaddi Kabaddi has its roots in India and Iran .
Other Sports Other sports which became popular during certain periods include archery, swimming, hunting, and weightlifting.
GILLI DANDA Gilli Danda : Gilli Danda is a sport played in the rural areas and small towns all over India. The game is played with two sticks : a large one called a danda, which is used to hit a smaller one, the gilli. It is interesting to know that the idea of cricket was derived from this game.
The word Kalari means " battlefield" in Malayalam. Training for Kalaripayattu , a martial art of Kerala is traditionally done inside the Kalari . Also the past village schools of Kerala were known by the name Kalari Flowers , incense and water are offered to the deity every day. Before starting the day's practice, it is the norm for practitioners to pray to the deity. Kalaripayattu
SATOLIYA It needs seven small flat stones ; every stone size should be less than the other stone. Put these stones over another in decreasing order its looks like a small tower then hit it by cloths made handball form a fixed distance. Any number of people can play it. This game is also known as Pithoo in some regions of India.
Mallakhamb Mallakhamb is an ancient traditional Indian sport. ‘ Malla ’ means gymnast, and ‘ khamb ’ means pole. Thus , the name ‘ Mallakhamb ’ stands for ‘a gymnast’s pole’. Mallakhamb was used used by wrestlers for practicing their skills in the game KUSTI

SAAP SEEDI This game had its origin in India and was known as Mokshapat . It was used to teach Hindu Dharma Hindu values to children . The British renamed it as Snakes and Ladders. The game was created by the 13th century poet Sant (Saint) Gyandev . The ladders in the game represented virtues and the snakes indicated vices. The game was played with cowrie shells and dices.
Vallamkali The snake boat race , known as Vallamkali in Kerala. It is an interesting traditional game held on the occasion of Onam . It is a famous water sport and one of the main attraction held in Kerala.
A cockfight is a blood sport between two roosters (cocks), or more accurately gamecocks , held in a ring called a cockpit.
CRICKET In 1721, British soldiers docked and decided to play cricket. They started playing with the locals Cricket became one of the first sports introduced to India . It instantaneously became a national favourite .
Polo The late 19th century saw the rise in modern polo , also known to some as ‘ pulu .’ Silchar . Assam became home to the first polo club in India in 1834. POLO
Elephant Polo It is played in India (Rajasthan), Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, England and Scotland. Since very ancient times, Elephants have been a part of Indian culture. They were representatives of the strength and power of Kings and Emperors .
BADMINTON The origins of Badminton derive from England. However, with India being part of the British empire , it was ultimately played by officers stationed in the city of Puna during the 1860s .
TENNIS The introduction of tennis came in the 1880s, courtesy of British Army and Civilian Officers. It soon gathered a fair bit of interest .
Hockey Hockey is regarded as the national sport of India because it is one of the oldest sports. In the late 19th century, hockey became quite widespread in India , as a result of the British Empire.
