3. TERRITORIES Most states where English is an official language are former territories of the British Empire. Originating from the United Kingdom, English has spread to all corners of the world. Because of England’s history of colonization, English has been introduced to every continent and the use of media and importance in business affairs has made it a primary language in many countries.

4. Which European country speaks the most English? With a proficiency of 71.45%,  the Netherlands  is the country with the highest proficiency in English in all of continental Europe. Whether it's the similarities between English and Dutch, or some other factor, the population of this region can speak English at near-native levels.

5. ORGANIZATIONS   English is the sole official language of the Commonwealth of Nations and of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). English is one of the official languages of the United Nations, the European Union, NAFTA, the African Union, the  Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Caribbean Community, the Union of South American Nations, and many other international organisations .

Although English is not  an official language at the national level in the United States, most states and territories within the United States have English as an official language, and only Puerto Rico uses a language other than English as a primary working language. The United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, where the overwhelming majority of native English speakers reside, do not have English as an official language  de jure , but English is considered their  de facto  official language because it dominates in these countries.

7. THE MOST POPULAR SECOND LANGUAGE The English language has approximately 400 million native speakers worldwide, trailing only Mandarin and Spanish. However, it is also the single most popular second language. As a result, when native and non-native English speakers are combined, it is recognized as the single most widely-spoken global language.

8. In fact, English is recognized as an official language in a total of 67 different countries, as well as 27 non-sovereign entities. Moreover, it is a major business language, as well as the official language of a number of the world’s most important institutions, including the United Nations, NATO and the European Union.

9. THE US AND THE UK English is perhaps most commonly associated with the United States and the United Kingdom; the two largest English speaking countries. It is believed that there are around 230 million native speakers in the United States, making it the largest English-speaking country, while the United Kingdom has approximately 60 million native speakers. Despite having two different official languages, Canada has the third largest English-speaking population, with somewhere in the region of 20 million native speakers, while Australia is next in the list, with around 17 million.

10. ISLANDS In addition to countries listed, there are a handful more of English territories and islands that are also English speaking. Of these territories, the majority of them have French listed as an official (de facto) language. These countries are: Akrotiri and Dhekelia , American Samoa, Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Christmas Island, Curacao, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Guam, Hong Kong, Isle of Man, Jersey, Norfolk Island, Northern Mariana Islands, Pitcairn Islands, Puerto Rico, Sint Maarten, Turks and Caicos Islands, and U.S. Virgin Islands.

11. FUN FACTS How many countries speak only English? As of 2019, there were  59 sovereign states and 27 non-sovereign entities  where English was an official language. Many administrative divisions have declared English an official language at the local or regional level.

FUN FACTS Why do Swedes speak English so well? “Swedes are eager to reach people outside of their country, and they benefit economically and linguistically from this” As  Sweden aims to internationalise its higher education sector and attract more foreign talent , one of its advantages is the country's high English proficiency.

13. FUN FACTS Which is the 2 nd largest English speaking country? India  now claims to be the world's second-largest English-speaking country. The most reliable estimate is around 10% of its population or 125 million people, second only to the US and expected to quadruple in the next decade

15. FUN FACTS What is the poorest E nglish speaking country? To narrow down this list, we first looked at the 13 countries where fewer than 10 percent of the population speaks English, according to The Telegraph. These include  China, The Gambia, Malawi, Colombia, Swaziland, Brazil, Russia, Argentina, Algeria, Uganda, Yemen, Chile and Tanzania .
