Android vs iOS Mr. Roshan Bhattarai

Mobile Applications Mobile app is a software application developed specifically for use on small, wireless computing devices such as:  smart phones and tablets, rather than desktop or laptop computers Mobile apps are designed to run on specific mobile operating systems such as  iOS , Android and Windows Phone. When a mobile app is downloaded and installed on a device, it is stored in the device's memory and is launched using the device's operating system. Mobile application development is the process of making software for smart phones, tablets etc, most commonly for the Android and iOS operating systems

Android OS Android  is a mobile operating system based on a modified version of the  Linux kernel and other open-source software designed primarily for touch screen-based mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets Android has historically been developed by a consortium of developers known as the Open Handset Alliance, but its most widely used version is primarily developed by Google Android began its life Android Inc., in 2003. Google acquired Android Inc. and its key employees in 2005 for $50 million First released in 2008, Android is currently the world's most widely used operating system; the latest version, released on October 15, 2024, is Android 15 It has the largest installed base of any operating system in the world with over three billion monthly active users  and accounting for 46% of the global operating system market

Advantages of Android 1 . Cost-Efficient Development: The open-source nature of the platform allows developers to work freely without the constraints of costly licensing. This not only saves money but also encourages innovation. 2. Affordability: When compared to their counterparts in the iOS and Windows ecosystems, Android phones consistently offer a more economical choice (budget-friendly pricing) 3. Open-Source Freedom: Android stands as a shining example of an open-source platform, licensed under Apache. This openness fosters an environment where virtually anyone can create applications and contribute to the growth of the Android ecosystem.

4. Seamless Cloud Integration: The Android system's affiliation with Google brings a unique advantage. Many users have Gmail accounts, granting them access to Google's robust cloud storage services. Each user receives a generous 15 GB of free cloud storage, more than sufficient for most personal needs. 5. Flexible App Distribution: Unlike iOS , which mandates the use of the App Store, Android offers developers greater flexibility in-app distribution. Android app creators can choose from a variety of third-party platforms for publishing their apps 6. Ongoing Evolution: Android benefits immensely from a thriving community of developers and users who actively provide feedback. This continuous exchange of insights and ideas leads to the regular scrutiny and improvement of codes and features. 7. Efficient Multitasking Capabilities: Running the Android OS on well-equipped hardware empowers users with the ability to seamlessly operate multiple applications concurrently. Eg : music playback while text messaging

1. Battery Drain: Android apps often run in the background, consuming a significant amount of battery resources. Stopping these apps can be challenging, especially since many of them are system-related. 2. Performance Issues on Low-Spec Devices: Android OS is resource-intensive and demands substantial storage space. Consequently, devices with lower hardware specifications tend to experience slower performance. 3. Mandatory Gmail Account: Accessing an Android device requires a Gmail ID, as Android is a Google product. Users must remember their email ID and password, making it essential for device access and unlocking. 4. Limited Update Support: Android OS may lack timely update support, preventing users from accessing the latest software versions and features available on other operating systems. Disadvantages of Android

5. Lack of Built-In Virus Protection: Android OS does not offer built-in virus protection, unlike some competing platforms. Users must download and install antivirus programs to safeguard their devices from potential threats 6. Advertisement Pop-Ups: Many free apps on the Google Play Store display advertisements in notification bars and within the application, which is irritating/disruptive to the user experience 7. Automatic App and Game Shutdowns: Android's tendency to force-close apps, especially larger ones, can be a source of frustration for users.

iOS iOS  is a mobile operating system developed by Apple exclusively for its mobile devices, launched in June 2007 Major versions of iOS are released annually; the current stable version,  iOS 18, was released to the public on September 16, 2024 It powers many of the company's mobile devices, including the  iPhone , and is the basis for three other operating systems made by Apple:  iPadOS ,  tvOS , and watchOS iOS is the world's second most widely installed mobile operating system, after Android. As of December 2023, Apple's App Store contains more than 3.8 million iOS  mobile apps

Advantages of iOS 1. Simple Interface: The iPhone ensures that all applications and features work the way they were intended by Apple, allowing a very easy user experience. Also unlike Android devices, iOS devices are consistent. There is no major change in its interface or design, as they are produced by the same company. 2. The App Store: App Store, which is the official and exclusive platform for downloading and installing apps on iOS devices. The App Store has over 2 million apps, covering a wide range of categories and genres. The App Store also has strict quality and security standards, ensuring that the apps are safe, reliable, and compatible with iOS devices. 3. Security: iOS is also known for its robust security features, which protect the users' data and privacy. iOS has various security measures, such as encryption, passcode , Touch ID, Face ID, and Find My iPhone , which prevent unauthorised access and theft of iOS devices and data

4. Hardware and Software: Apple is one of the few large companies that designs its devices with both hardware and software. iOS devices and apps have a high level of compatibility and synchronization, ensuring that the users have a smooth and hassle-free user experience 5. Supports Multi-language and Smooth Multitasking: You have the option of selecting any language on your device. For your device, there is plenty of language support on the iPhone . 21 languages, including Spanish, Chinese, and Portuguese, are currently supported by iOS . In addition, with iOS , we can do multiple tasks at one time without having the trouble of apps crashing or bug errors like it tends to happen more often in android.

Disadvantages of iOS Very Pricey: The high price is obviously one of the major drawbacks of iOS that does not help it outshine the android operating system. IOS gadgets are very expensive Not Open Source: i OS is not open source, which means we can’t customize iOS on computers other than Apple devices and can’t support it. If you consider Android, then any smartphone company like Huawei ,  Xiaomi , Samsung, or HTC will easily customize it. Uniform screen layout and identical icons: iOS devices and apps lack diversity and customisation , and users have limited options to personalise and modify their iOS devices and apps Limited storage options: iOS also has limited storage options, which means that iOS devices and apps have low and fixed storage capacity. iOS devices and apps do not have expandable storage options
