3. INTRODUCTION TO SIWES Clay minerals are major industrial minerals used for various purposes. This include cosmetic, pharmaceutical, refractory, ceramics etc. Clay minerals are major components of sedimentary rocks found within the shale or sand units. The sufficient deposits of clay in Nigeria have been investigated and confirmed that if clay deposit is analyzed and exploited it will generate revenue for the nation and solve economic crisis.

4. LOCATION OF THE STUDY The study area is located at Ediene Abak , in Abak Local Governemnet Area of Akwa Ibom State. It has a geographical coordinate of 5 0’ 11.8296’’ North and 7 46’ 27.372’’ E. . It is bounded by Manta, Ukpom , and Midim waterside at the North, Oku Abak , Abak Usung atai by the West, Urua Usung , Ikot Ofong Ikono by the South and Ikot Ekpeyak Ikono by the East.

5. PROBLEM STATEMENT There is sparsity of information on the geological mapping and structural analysis of clay deposit of the area and this has made it necessary for this research to be carried out in order to fill in the gap of the information.

6. AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The aim of the research is to analyze the geotechnical properties of clay deposits from Ediene Abak in Akwa ibom state. To conduct geotechnical and geochemical tests on the clay samples, which include; Particle size, Atterberg limits, Permeability, Specific gravity, Compaction, Triaxial shear strength and Unconfined compressive strength. To determine its suitability in various industrial use. O bjectives

7. METHODOLOGY/ MATERIALS Desk study: geological mapping of the study area . Field survey/investigation and collection of samples; here, reconnaissance surveys are carried out to identify the available locations. It also involves gathering of necessary tools needed for a successful field investigation and samples collection from the field. Laboratory analysis : this stage basically involves carrying out various analyses on the samples. Methods
